Will Murray win Marseille &/or Dubai?
« on: February 01, 2010, 05:49 PM »
After yesterdays anguish, lets look ahead to this months scheduled tournaments for Murray. The sooner he is back on court winning matches, the pain of the defeat yesterday will diminish although it won't be forgotten.
Marseille has quite a good field considering it's only an ATP 250. Del Potro, Tsonga and Soderling are in the draw (injury permitting). The top 4 seeds get a bye into the last 16 as it is only a 28 man draw. Other players competing are Monfils, Baghdatis, Robredo and Youzhny. Murray and Tsonga are the last two champions in Marseille.
Dubai is virtually the 10th Masters 1000 tournament of the year with the quality of the field. Seven of the top ten in todays latest rankings are scheduled to play, only Nadal, Soderling and Tsonga aren't.
In the last 4 years, AM has picked up a title in February. San Jose 2006 & 2007, Marseille 2008 and Rotterdam last year.
Will he make it 5 in a row?

Nice analysis.
Marseille is a surprisingly strong field, though Andy seems to be able to win these sorts of tournaments at will these days. Think he's only there as a courtesy appearance due to pulling out at the last minute in 2009.
Dubai is always strong and a prestigious tournament. If he can carry his AO form forward and be spurred on even further by his loss to Federer, I don't see why he can't do very well indeed in these two.

I am hoping that Andy will use these 2 relatively "minor" events to fine tune his game for the GSs. I think Andy will get to the SF stage but may lose out whilst trying out his new more agressive style. I think he will practise hitting deep attacking shots and getting to the net more.

I do like the Dubai tournaments...
Last year it fell during my half term, and my sister was away, so I just remember a really serene week of watching tennis all day long...
Let's hope he can bounce back and give us some good tennis

Murray
Tsonga
Soderling
Monfils
Youzhny
Baghdatis
Wow alot my faves are here!! I dont care whether or not Andy wins this I'd prefer him to but more importantly I'd like Andy to keep playing the way he was in AO, and not regress to a more passive stlye. Its a great field so he will most certainly be tested.

I hope so too Philip - it gives his game another dimension, a useful and often necessary string to his bow so to speak and will help keep an air of uncertainty about him for his opponents.

I think Andy has a great chance to win Marseille. Don't know so much about Dubai but I sure HOPE so, given that he'd have to beat Fed which I reckon is exactly what he needs right now.
Okay, it isn't a major but that just isn't the point. Also he needs to if he is to legitimately get back the number 2 ranking soon, given that Djokovic will increase the gap as he is playing in Rotterdam while Andy isn't there to retain his points from last year. Besides, the more Andy improves the better, right? Not to mention that the more he wins the easier it will be to finally get that first major as by then winning becomes a habit so it should help with the nerves.
I'll be keeping everything crossed at any rate.

I think he has a very good chance at both. Marseille should be quite easy for him, touch wood, Del Potro is the major threat and he has a good record agaisnt him. Dubai arguably very hard but after his performance in AO i would tip him for final at least, Fed is the person he has to worry about in that tournment, although i know that Novak could potentially beat Andy.
