Well if he is going to hit a rash of unforced errors I'd rather he got them out his systen in an exho!

But I understand he also played some very good tennis, and was serving well.  Things are bound to go up and down like a seesaw for a while until he finds his feet again, although hopefully there will be more ups than downs once the AO gets under way!

U/E's have always been part of the parcel that makes up Andy's game.

The difference between Now and Back Then is that he doesn't dwell on them and can buckle down to get the job done most of the time.

Anyone else remember that awful fluffed forehand into the net at Wimbles 2009 against Rafa? Or was it 2010?
I was all .. NOOOOOOOOOOO!!!!! Because I knew that was the end of the match.

I don't feel like that now.

I was more interested in the 17 aces   yay  much more encouraging. As you say, unforced errors are part and parcel of Andy he's a bit like me that way  :p

Wasn't it 2011 - and he hit an easy FH long? Think  Anyway whenever, thank goodness these days are over and that he can usually bounce back from these mistakes.  Even the very best players have made them, so it's not a disgrace.

My 2 cents worth - I think the aussie players have had a lot longer to get used to the new lighter balls and faster courts.
Andy had quite a few forehands long with the balls flying more. Was up at 6 to watch the match. Andy was up and down quite a few games were to love but more with deuces.

Thanks for the input dragonlady.  It's always good to get the views of people who actually saw the match.  Also I knew about the faster courts but not the lighter balls.  Hopefully Andy well get better acclimatised before his first match.

Now is some kind person going to post a video of it or not??

Funny thing is this reminding me of Wimbledon 2012 prep. He kept losing matches exhos, Queens. I remember everyone predicting any early exist. Look how that turned out. I know this different circumstances but hey ho. Smile

The only predictable thing about Andy, is the not knowing how he'll perform in any given tournament!  Very Happy

I think it's unusual for Andy to have that many unforced errors and in fact in the past I think his ue count was quite low because he was playing more defensive tennis.  But I'm sure it's just a reflection of lack of match play.  Unfortunately I missed the first set, when it sounded like he was playing better from what the comms said; that said it is of course right to rejoice in all those aces because that is true testimony to him feeling ok with his back.   And I agree it's pretty amazing that he feels able to play here at all as it's not that long ago he hadn't even picked up a racquet after his op.

Not gonna win the AO this year, I feel. Andy's rustier than my garden gate.
UE's shocking
BUT so many positives! His serve was quite magnificent which surely must mean his back is OK yay Now have high hopes for the rest of the year Fingers crossed
Am in lerve with the Aussie commie wub Just fantastic and so appreciative of both players. clap clap
Anyone know who it was. Simone? Bevc?

Blueberry - it was John Fitzgerald and Geoff Masters (from memory).

I thought Andy was playing at 3/4 pace. He did look really good and when he decided to really wind it up he was able to hit really heavy, penetrating ground strokes and looked world class. He was a bit annoyed at times with his court movement, calling himself slow to get to balls, which may explain the UFE's. I agree with others and think he is just trying to remain under the radar because he really doesn't know what will happen when playing the top 6 players in the world.

Later on in some other tennis coverage Todd Woodbridge warned against reading too much into the result and clearly stated that both players looked good, that seems to lend weight to the theory.

Do you what I am pleased to see is the second set tiebreak was closer than the first even though he lost the match. To me it shows progress. He is nearly there. Smile

@Simone
Thank you. I will keep my ears alert for them. Seemed to be just one and he was so good! Kept on about Andy's fabulous serve but also his "huge forehand" which was music to my ears because it was not ever thus.
He was so positive about both players. And not one mention of Fed, not one shocking
