Davis Cup tie away to Lithuania - March 2010

Quote

Dan had a great confidence boost to take 2 sets off Berankis on Friday.  His opponent lost in 3 sets to Ward and has played in 2 consecutive days so Dan should win in 3 or 4 sets (finger's crossed).

If he loses today then that his Davis cup career will be over but the character he showed to win 2 sets against Berankis gives me confidence it will be a win today.

Eh? You know it's in a 5th set and Evans is down a break, right? lol Frown

This is what it's going to be like when Andy retires.

This is a very dark day for British tennis.

I just can't see Andy being interested to play in the 3rd division tennis wilderness apart from pure loyalty to GB.

GB lose the tie, relegation playoff against Turkey coming up.

Christ, we could be in Group III before long. doh

Still, I don't want Andy anywhere the DC team until they get back to at least Group I under their own steam. It's utterly pointless for him to artificially improve the standing of an essentially 3rd rate team.

We had the better doubles team, but their best singles player was higher ranked than either of ours.
I really hoped Evans would win that last match though.

The cold facts are that Andy aside, we are a very poor nation (on the men's side, at least).
There's some hope for the women, at least.

John Lloyd's record is also absolutely abysmal, but he is working with below-par players.

Embarrassing.

Sad, walking about.

Boggo to the rescue, heck why not even try Fleming or Marray in singles at this rate

The captain's role seems to me to be primarily to motivate and focus and our players are coming out badly against similar players in the last few ties. Defunct captain, sub-standard team. Not sure how things can improve, there's no-one else coming up behind Andy really. Any decent juniors?

Wonder if Henman or Rusedski fancy a crack at the captaincy? Not that it will make much difference I don't suppose.
