Heather Watson forced to serve underarm in Sony Open defeat due to shoulder injury

Heather Watson has been making great strides up the WTA rankings ladder this year, but she was handicapped on Wednesday by a shoulder injury and endured a 6-4, 6-0 defeat at the Sony Open in Miami against the French veteran Virginie Razzano.

“Three days ago I woke up in the morning and I couldn't move my shoulder,” said Watson, who was forced to deliver a number of underarm serves. “The physios said my first rib had shifted up and my shoulder had gone into spasm.

“Until today I hadn’t hit an underarm serve in my life.

Heather is back in action this week, after injury in March.

Playing in Cagnes-sur-Mer she won a scrappy first round match in straight sets on Tuesday (first clay match since RG last year).
Lost a lead of 5-2 in 2nd, but won the TB

2nd round today v Feuerstein, she won 9 of the first 10 games to lead 6-1 3-0, then lost 9 of the next 10 games to trail 6-1 4-6-0-3. Just held serve, so now 1-3

Feuerstein was serving for the match for about the last 20 minutes! Several match points/break points and Heather finally gets the game. Serving now at 4-5

Brilliant! Hev wins 6-1 4-6 7-5. The last set took 1 hr 11 mins. Never gave up!

Steven @GBtennis  Cagnes-sur-Mer 100K R2: @HeatherWatson92 wins a mad rollercoaster of a match v Claire Feuerstein FRA WR 124 after saving 5 MPs 61 46 75! :-)

Last chance of JoKo and Heather to try and squeeze into the Wimbledon MD on merit/ranking this week. Would be nice if one or both of them could free up an extra wild card slot!

Hooray, Heather gets the win on her 10th Match Point!

Great to see she is having another good week. She is through to the SF in Prague without dropping a set, having beaten no 2 seed Klára Koukalová  WR 31 (CH 20 in 2013) in the first round, and no 5 seed  Karolína Plíšková WR 62 today.

and more good news...
Stuart Fraser @stu_fraser: Johanna Konta and Heather Watson make Wimbledon main draw by right, rather than having to rely on a wild card.

My ladies tennis sites all seem to still be in 2013 or hours behind?

WHO DOES SHE PLAY NEXT?

Heather plays Timea Babos WR 110 (CH 59) in the SF

Should be playing now, but I think there is a rain delay - previous match interrupted at 3-3 in the 3rd set
