Maria came out blazing in the 2nd set, looking to have her focus back breaking Heather to 2-0. Then in her next service lost it again completely giving away back to back DFs again and handing the break back to 2-1.

Gruelling points on Heather's serve leads to eventual break again. Next game though Sharapova throws it away yet again with UEs and another DF at the start. Maria has yet to consolidate any break she's made.

Heather threw away her next service game, and maria holds at last to take the 2nd set. Heather looks very much drained now unfortunately, looks like she's going out.

Unlucky Heather, sounded like a close one. What a year for British tennis. Murray's maiden slam. Robson in particular, and Watson breaking through Marray's doubles triumph at Wimbledon. Not a bad 2012.  |

Well done Heather. You really made a great match and got right under the ' screamer's' skin. We do seem to have some young female players coming up. Just hope the press keep off them.

I wouldn't say it was close; it was hard fought and she made things difficult for Maria but you could always tell Sharapova would come through it because even with the countless DFs and unforced errors on her forehand she's still clearly the better player. Like has been said many of times, Heather still isn't powerful enough to hit through top players. I wonder what she's working on with regards to that aspect of her game? Of course you're not actually expecting her to win against the world no.2. It was good that she managed to make the match that competitive considering the distance in ranking between them so I'm sure she'll be taking away a lot of confidence from this week anyway |

Heather played a great match today. Sharapova definitely made things harder for herself with countless double faults and UEs, but Heather hung in there - she fights so hard. There must be something about Heather's game that makes Sharapova feel uncomfortable as that's the second time she's been taken to three sets.
@Laundry - I think Heather is trying to be more aggressive, very hard to do against a power player like Sharapova though.

Brilliant - Heather through to the 3rd round in Osaka, with a win over 6th seed Medina Garrigues 6-7 6-2 6-3. Plays Parmentier next who knocked out the 2nd seed Zheng.

She's partnered with Date-Krumm, they are 4th seeds and will play 2nd seeds.

Heather has made it to the final of Osaka after beating Misaki Doi in two sets!
So Britain didn't have a WTA finalist since 1990 and we now have two in the space of three weeks. Could Heather steal Laura's limelight by going one better?

Wow looks like Watson vs Chang, Chang must be playing really well though considering who she's taken out (including Laura) but all of her matches do seem to be have been pretty close. This could have easily been a Heather - Laura final.
