Ebden wins 6-0, 5-7, 6-0.

Some absolutely woeful tennis on display. Ward had one good spell in the entire match (winning 4 games in a row from 6-0, 5-3 down) but was very lethargic for the rest. Ebden merely solid.

I watched this, and thought it was a rather cruel scoreline. Wardy maybe a bit lucky to win the 2nd set, but also a bit unlucky not to win any games in the other sets. There were lots of long rallies and some break points, but he never seemed to have quite enough to do any damage to Ebden, who seemed pretty confident throughout.

It all seemed very bleak though - apparently there were about 30 people watching, mostly supporting the Aussie. It was cold and windy with noisy construction work going on nearby. I don't really understand how these tournaments are financed, and have to admire some of the contestants for just going through it.

Thought Wardy's DC win over Sam Querrey should get a mention on his own thread!

Asked if he had always believed he could fight back, Ward said: "I did. It's easy to say but I played him in the past and beat him in three sets.
"At one point he was serving unbelievably and I couldn't really get near him. I held serve from 0-40 and that was key. I started reading the serve a little bit better. It's just a great win. I dug in and gave myself a chance. In the end it worked."

And for those who can watch it, here is the come back (available until 8th Feb)

Heroic. His second heroic win for GB in the Davis Cup. I don't know if it's the team atmosphere, Leon's coaching or five setters, but James really seems to thrive in these sort of matches.

Touch the sky - and touch it he did.

it sounded like the talk he had with Leon during his toilet break after the first set really helped him turn it round.  I do think Leon has proved a truly excellent and inspiring captain.

I think that James very much needs the focus that responsibility brings or needs coaching to get it right. Left to himself in tournaments he regularly falls apart in matches. Leon can obviously motivate!

Great that Wardy finally got some ranking points (40) for his Davis Cup efforts. Took him up 19 places to 156. Sadly he drops 48 points this week as he wasn't there to defend his West Lakes final place, so he'll be back to 178 next week.

According to British Tennis site, he'll be playing Quimper Challengers next week.

Just lost the first set 6:2 to a bloke about 100 places below him. Can't work him out at all.

Worth remembering, I guess, that Authom beat James 1&2 the last time they played. Something about the match-up that suits the Belgian, maybe

Match-up had nothing to do with it this time, James was just woeful. Incredibly passive and no fight.

Authom has a huge serve, so if James was returning poorly he had no chance.

Ward was broken 4 times in 8 games. Returning wasn't the issue here.

^ I wonder if James is suffering a bit of post DC comedown. It's amazing to me how different he is in a GB shirt. It's like he needs the inspiration somehow, or maybe Leon Smith should coach him.
