Wasn't a great match to watch, with Authom continuing a successful run on indoor hard courts. Then he retired from his next match.

Only 3 out of 8 seeds (3,5,7) made it through to the second round - so a good opportunity lost for Wardy, and/or tournament just a bit of a washout in flood hit Quimper.

Wardy has a wild card into the main draw in Dubai.

Plays Teymuraz Gabashvili (WR 65) in round 1

He was practising (and tweeting) with Andy earlier in the week:

Now THIS is a choke (unlike Dan's recent defeats). 5-1 up in the third, twice served for the match, now 5-5. Oh James...

Ends a five game losing streak to take it to a tie-break, squandered 2MPs but takes it on the third. Very Happy

Thank christ for that. Great win and 45 points to boot!

L32: (WC) James Ward WR 177 beat Teymuraz Gabashvili (RUS) WR 60 (CH 59 in 2009) by 2-6 6-4 7-6(6)

WR15 Youzhny in R2.

Just seen this result - never over until it's over with these guys! Well done Wardy, some useful points, and some very good prize money - deserves it after his DC efforts over the years.

MASSIVE prize money for a player of his stature too - over $13k just for losing in the first round, with James picking up over $24k for this win.

He could beat Youzhny.

I don't think so. I would be really surprised if he did though.
