Heather Watson

Quote

Heather got off to a slow and nervous start in the first set, going down 4-0, before fighting back to bring the scoreline to 4-3. She had a break point to bring things to 4-4, but couldn't capitalise and was then broken in the next game, losing the first set 6-3. The second set saw a brilliant response from Heather and she took it 6-1.

After some long points and lengthy rallies early in the third both players looked like they were suffering in the heat and though they both had break point opportunities on the other's serve, neither could take them. Heather finally broke in the fifth game of the third set and consolidated it with a solid service game. Rodina held serve and Heather then had to serve it out at 5-3, but got tight and went down 15-40. One break point was saved with a big first serve, but the second was lost with a forehand into the net.

On the first point of the next game Rodina's serve was called out, but was in fact in when challenged, and the point was awarded to the serve. Heather thought that the point should have been replayed because it was called out before she hit the return and therefore her return was disrupted. A slightly frustrated discussion with the umpire ensued and she responded well to bring things to 30-30. Both players were playing nervously in rallies and Rodina eventually levelled things at 5-5.

The next game saw Heather hitting good serves and deep, aggressive, ground strokes whilst trying to let out some of the tension with some unexpected screaming when hitting the ball! An excellent return on Rodina's first serve of the next game saw Heather take the first point before mistakes from both players saw things go to 30-30, before Heather gained a match point. Net cords are lucky for some and unlucky for others, and on the last point of the match luck was on Heather's side when Rodina's shot caught the net, bounced high and to the left and landed on right side of the net but the wrong side of the tramline and Heather won 3-6 6-1 7-5.

Today's hard fought win sees Heather go beyond the first round of Miami for the first time since 2012, when she got to the third round before losing to Victoria Azarenka; she will play Kerber in round two.
