Lost 5-7, 6-4, 6-4 to lowly ranked Indian Amritaj. Frown

To be fair to James it was his first tournament back, and whilst Amritaj is low ranked he only started playing again in October after two years out (injuries). He was ranked in the top 200 previously.

Big shame though, huge opportunity to qualify for the main draw on the main tour.

^^ yes, it's a shame, but it seemed to be close, and at least James got some match practice in after his injury time off.

Well James didn't do any worse against Amritraj than Yuichi Sugita (ranked 117) did yesterday. Sugita also lost in 3 sets.

So a decent few days for James considering he's hardly played since Wimbledon.

James is still in Australia, he went out of AO in 3rd round qualifying.

Last week in Tasmania he beat 6th seed James Duckworth in R1, but went out in R2

This week in West Lakes Challenger he beat James Duckworth (7) again in R1 (and has overtaken him in rankings!). Followed up with a win yesterday in R2 over a young qualifier.

Plays 1st seed Yuichi Sugita (see Allan's post above) in Quarter Finals tomorrow.

He's got his ranking back up (at 245 today), so is GB no 3 again behind Jamie Baker (204)

Making good progress. Really disappointing loss to Lemke last week though who's ranked down inthe 500's.

17yo Nick Kyrgios who won the Aussie Jnrs is also in the QFs there with a 2&0 thrashing in his R2. Only has 15 ranking points to his name - will double that at least. Big, big talent.

Good win over 1st seed Sugita (WR 140) 6-2 6-3. Takes James's ranking from 263 at the start of the tournament to 226 today.

Plays Kyrgios in SF (see MH's post above!)

Other SF is Lobkov (WR 327, now 284) v Barton (WR345, now 300, has had some good wins this year - Karlovic, Ito..)

Impressive result from James.

Kyrgios into a Challenger SF at 17. Only even won 9 matches in his career before this tournament, and never even made a Futures final.

Will be very interesting to see if he can topple Ward too. If Kyrgios wins this event he'll be the youngest Challenger winner in a very long time. And with no seeded player left in the draw, it's really up for grabs.

Back to Ward, this is his first Challenger SF since winning Vancouver in 2011. Had a very injury-hit 2012 so would be a great start to 2013 if he can win here. Hard to gauge just how good Kyrgios is right now though.

Ward takes the first set 6-4. Come on.

Ward has had 5 break points in the 2nd but it's still on serve, 3-3.

Aussie crowd getting vocal and Kyrgios starts to raise his game. Breaks at 5-5 and levels the match. Ward looking a little deflated, hasn't really responded at all. Really should've taken at least one of those break points (one was right on his racquet but he clipped the net), but since then has only won one point against the Kyrgios serve.

Kyrgios and his coach screaming loudly at every single Ward mistake now, quite irritating. Have some respect.

Ward breaks at the start of the 3rd. Kyrgios falling apart and Ward breaks again, to love this time, for 5-1.

Ward takes it 6-4, 5-7, 6-1 and is into his first final in 18 months. Smile Will face WR345 Matt Barton in the final who is at a career high ranking.

It's apparently Ward's birthday today as well.

Thanks for the report MH. I was meant to be sleeping, because of work this morning, but ended up checking livescores every few minutes!

Behaviour of Kyrgios and his coach sounds poor, and James will be up against another young Aussie tonight who'll get the local support. Must be tough, but I suppose they get used to it. I hope he wins.

From Steven ‏@GBtennis:
Only the 3rd Brit this century to make more than 3 Challenger singles finals (Boggo, Parmar), @JamesWardtennis has now made 4 of GB's last 5

Now level on points with Jamie Baker but with more pts from Slams & Masters (69 cf 43), @JamesWardtennis should be GB no. 2 again on Monday

Kyrgios was screaming and grunting at every opportunity from about 4-4 in the 2nd. Mutters to himself a lot as well, mic picked most of it up. Ward remained composed throughout really, just the odd 'come on!' after winning break points (but couldn't convert). Kyrgios hit two big serves on the 4th and 5th BPs at 3-2, which is what got the crowd going. Once Ward finally broke in the 3rd Kyrgios seemed to give up really and James just carried on doing what he was doing.

I've noticed that Ward was a lot more reserved today than he was last year. He used to be a bit of a ball-basher, but I think he's been focusing on more passive-aggression, which was on show when he beat Andujar (and so nearly beat Fish) at Wimbledon last year. Playing the angles and getting it deep now, only stepping in and letting fly when the opportunity arises. Serve was firing well as well. Such a shame he got injured when he did last year, right after his career-best win.

Don't know much about Barton but yet another of the up and coming Aussies. I thought he was a bit older, but he's only 21.

Roughly 2am tomorrow, but there's a doubles match on before it from half 12 GMT so it might vary.

Should be streams going, there were a few links last night although I think they were all the same stream. It's not great quality and the angle is a bit low down, but it's certainly watchable. No comms either, which is nice.

Matthew Barton won 6-2 6-3. I watched the match, but the angle and out of sync sound made it quite hard to know what was going on really. The crowd seemed pretty quiet considering there was an Australian playing, but there was one guy shouting out for Wardy (his coach?)

Barton seemed to be pretty much in charge, James got a few break points, but they were all saved.

MB seems to be having an incredible year - was ranked 445 in January, 345 at the start of this tournament and 242 today. Beaten lots of players ranked 85-300 in 4 tournaments this year, and didn't concede many games in his matches this week. He said he got a new coach 6 months ago - seems to be working well for him!

Well done to James though, a good first month back.
