Thrashed Eyserric 3&1 to make QR2. Tough match next though - takes on former top 100 player and 27th Q seed Matthias Bachinger.

Lost the first set 2-6. Broke at start of 2nd and managed to hold serve, saving BPs in a couple of games, to take 2nd 6-4. Come on Wardy!

Bachinger to serve first in 3rd.

Technical hitch and no scores for a while, but Ward now a break up and serving at 3-2 in 3rd set

.... and he does it! Wins 2-6 6-4 6-4. Got better and better - losing only 5 points on serve in the 3rd. Well done Wardy!

Plays Devvarman [6] next, who beat Ginepri in 3 sets.

Great result for James, but it doesn't get any easier. Devvarman was top 60 before his injury that took him out of the rankings completely.

Just like in Melbourne, we have two British males into the FQR. Would be great if one or even both of James or Dan could join Andy in the main draw.

Liz Curran ‏@lizcurran
Wardy winning @JamesWardtennis @BritishTennis - Leon Smith and Dan Evans can be seen supporting in the background

(Edit -just noticed - seems to have become a leftie!)

Neil Harman ‏@NeilHarmanTimes
Matthias Bachinger a little too good in everything in 1st set against James Ward. Takes it 6-2. Tremendous court coverage, volleying

Think NH probably left then

Liz Curran ‏@lizcurran
@NeilHarmanTimes yes but wardy kept going and became stronger as his oppo waned. Great stuff - Davis Cup spirit alive + well. Evo next!

there was a band of 3 that cheered him throughout - we even got sarcastic applause back off the oppo when Wardy broke!

Good luck to Wardy and Dan today - yes MH, it would be great to have another Brit or two in the main draw. Nice that Andy has been supporting them recently with tweets etc.

Unfortunately James was edged out 6-3, 3-6, 6-4 by Devvarman, having lead by a break in the third (won 6 games in a row from 3-6, 2-3 down actually). Really close match. Devvarman is effectively a top 100 player all things told, to be fair to James. Still, 16 points for this week covers most of the 23 he's defending, and has nothing left to defend for the rest of the year.

Anyone know what's happened to James hasn't played recently, not that I can see anyway.

Yes he has - just suffered defeats in the first round both times.

Was seeded 2nd in an Asian Challenger but drew the under-ranked Kudryavtsev (really unfortunate draw - many of the other players were ranked outside the top 500) and lost in the first round.

Then played Mons qualifying last week but lost in QR1 to a nobody.

Good win for James Ward who is back in action in Melbourne this week - a new challengers tournament I think.

He beat Greg Jones AUS WR 225 (CH 179 in 2010) 6-4 6-0. Jones had won 6-1 7-6 when they met in Vancouver in July.

Plays "fast rising" Aussie wild card Andrew Whittington next

They have only managed to complete four matches in two days because of rain in Melbourne - rather different to the awful conditions with bush fires in NSW

Wardy serving at 5-4 v Andrew Whittington

streamed at http://e-tennis.tv/

Some very noisy construction work or something going on. Now 5-5 sadly.

Maybe, but served out 2nd set OK. MTO for Whittington, now 1-1 in 3rd

It's been very windy, and play was suspended briefly in 2nd set for rain

And Wardy gets the win 5-7 6-4 6-3.

James Ward plays top seed Matt Ebden (WR 108, CH 61) at midnight (UK time) tonight in the Melbourne challenger semi-final.

So far this week his three wins have taken him from 180 to 166 in the rankings. Come on Wardy!

Ebden wins 6-0, 5-7, 6-0.

Some absolutely woeful tennis on display. Ward had one good spell in the entire match (winning 4 games in a row from 6-0, 5-3 down) but was very lethargic for the rest. Ebden merely solid.
