Aljaz lost 3-6 4-6 7-6 3-6 to Thiem and I felt he put in a great effort against a confident Thiem who recently won the title in Nice. Despite the scoreline I didn't think there was that much difference between the 2 in the match, just that Thiem played much better on the big points (apart from in the TB).
I thought that as well. One thing that stood out to me was that Alijaz didn't seem to be able, or perhaps willing, to change the direction of the ball. Overall the stats showed that both players were fairly close in terms of their level. The significant stats were second serve points won, and Alijaz had almost half the winners that Thiem had (34 to 60).
