A good article on Laura potential rise up the ranking.

While her serve remains fragile, Robson has made real inroads this summer and will be keen to end the season on a high with a strong run of results in Asia.
 
Krajan recently claimed that Robson "doesn't even know herself how good she is", which is high praise indeed. Australian Paul McNamee, coach of Hsieh Su-wei, who beat Robson in the Guangzhou final at the weekend, noticed real improvements in Robson, and has labelled the Brit a "top-20 player of the future".
 
"You cannot do what she has done at 18 unless you have weapons and we can all see those," he said. "But I also give great credit to her coach. Everyone needs the right person and I believe Laura has found him."
 
Krajan appears to have found a willing and able student in Robson. Having steered Dinara Safina to the world No. 1 spot back in 2009, can he turn the former Wimbledon junior champion into a future grand slam winner?

She plays Lourdes Dominguez Lino (WR67) next, who knocked out 15th seed Roberta Vinci.

Looking at the draw I just noticed that players who reached semi-finals in Tokyo get a 1st round bye in Beijing, but others don't. So 1st and 2nd seeds Azarenka and Sharapova play 1st round, unseeded Petrova doesn't. Does it ever work like that in the men's?

For the men, normally it is the top 8/16/32 seeds that get a bye. It will be difficult for someone outside the seeding position who has just won a tournament to fly in on Monday and play again on Tuesday with almost no time to recover physically and get used to the new court condition although this situation is quite rare.

What they are doing with the women that you have just described makes sense. This gives a fighting chance for someone who is knackered after reaching the SF/F at Tokyo, followed by a flight to Beijing. Without the bye, the girl would have no chance.

Laura up 5-4 in 1st set v Lourdes Dominguez Lino, going with serve.

Edit: well it was going with serve, but LDL now serving at 6-5

Unlucky for Laura.  Top 50 by the end of the year will be a tough ask now.  She'll need to go deep at Osaka unless she's also planning to play Barnstaple again although she's otherwise progressed beyond the Circuit events now.

She needs to find 200 points from somewhere.

Yes and she really should reach the QF's where she'll pick up 70 ranking points.  She'll then have to beat top 30 players to get further
