Sensational! Ward takes the match! I can't belive it....
Looking back, it was such a huge hit to his career to get injured when he did, just two weeks after a career-best win against Pablo Andujar at Wimbledon. Then got edged out in a 5th by Mardy Fish - two of the best performances of his career. Got injured and missed pretty much the rest of the year, briefly coming back before having to have surgery.
Easily a top 150 player is Ward. Hopefully he can hover round 200 (or better) where he is now until Wimbledon, then really kick back up the rankings in the latter half of the year where he has nothing to defend. Hopefully this win (and performance against Donskoy) can kickstart that his climb back up the rankings. It was only a year ago he beat Igor Sijsling to qualify for the Australian Open - since then Sijsling has risen to the top 70, coming close to beating Tommy Haas, whilst Ward has gone the other way.
How the heck is Ward ranked so low? Both of the them have pushed players ranked in the top 100 to 5 sets, and Ward has just beaten a player ranked 67.
Was top 150, thanks to a Challenger final + Challenger win in 2011 and then reaching Wimbledon R2 last year (beat Pablo Andujar, top 50 player in the first round in a 5 setter). Then got injured at Newport in July, barely played rest of season and couldn't defend that Challenger title.
Dropped down to #260 after injury, reached a Challenger final earlier this year and rose back to around #210.
Of course playing a match in this environment with a whole stadium roaring you on and cheering your opponent's every mistake offers some bias to the result and performance of both players.
