sad news indeed grab but I guess it was expected given how ill he'd been?

Wardy got through his first round of AO qualies, but made things hard for himself. Really should have taken the first set 6-2, but got broken twice when serving it out and then had to battle through a really tight tie break. He eventually won 7-6 6-4, about a minute after Dan Evans won by the same scoreline.

Wardy will face Novikov in round 2.

Wardy apparently suffered a lower back spasm during the match, there was a lengthy gap at 6-5 before the tiebreak and I assumed one of them had an issue, sorry to hear it was James. Hope he recovers ok for the second round.

Unfortunately Wardy lost in QR2. Really needed a day between matches for that back spasm to settle.

Wardy is on Question of Sport at the moment.

Wardy won his opening match at the Quimper Challenger in straight sets 6-4 6-4. Got broken once but broke back immediately. Some solid defence from him, some decent serving including 13 aces, and on the whole he rallied well. A few times he seemed to move as if he is still a little concerned about his back, but hopefully everything is ok with that now.

Played better in the first set off the ground, but served better in the second. Plays the winner of Pavlasek vs Jouan, which takes place tomorrow I think, so Wardy gets a rest day.

Wardy is on at an estimated time of 7pm tonight against Jouan - who is ranked 1265.

The match will be on the Challenger livestream via the ATP Challenger website.
