Your Davis Cup team for Ukraine
« on: January 24, 2009, 01:07 AM »
Lloyd has given some indications as to what the team will look like for Dec 6. There are alot of candidates there so who would you pick for this tie.
For me it's...
-Andy Murray. Obvious
-Josh Goodall. Next best behind Bogdanovic. Has previously qualified for US Open and is still only 23. Time to give Josh a chance to make his breakthrough.
-Daniel Evans. Very young still. I would have him as a 3rd choice singles player who is there for cover and to gain experience from being there.
-Ross Hutchins. Only because Jamie has been given his chance and hasnt really taken it by becoming THE doubles specialist GB need. Think Ross should have his chance to play without Jamie or Andy. I fancy Goodall as his partner.
The line up would be.
Goodall V Stakhovsky
Murray V whoever
Hutchins/Goodall V whoever/whoever
Murray V Stakhovsky
Play Goodall if its still live, if not give Evans a go.

If all fully fit, it would be :
Andy Murray
Jamie Baker
Ross Hutchins
Jamie Murray
Obviously, with Baker still struggling after illness, I'd probably pick Delgado or a youngster like Ward. There's no standout whatsoever for the second singles spot.

Yes its really a toss up, could be anyone I wouldnt rule John Lloyd out. Lloyd has already said sir panda he is only having one doubles player.

Yeah, but this is my team, I like having 2 doubles specialists.
I just think Jamie is either suffering from confidence at the moment, or he is being revealed as a pretty ordinary player.

Well I would say a bit of both. Jamie is a decent player but overrated.

JL hinting that Colin Fleming could be in with a shout as he's come back from nowhere in singles and dubs. Quite like idea of a 3match playoff 2 weeks prior, the winner getting the DC spot...

Yes it seems the fairest way to decide things. Where is this playoff going to be held though?

I agree with Sunnii's team. Evans has played really well recently and is currently our most successful Futures player, so it will be good to get him into the team early. Goodall has been consistently solid if not spectacular for a few years, so it's about time they let him have a run out.
I'd be very surprised if Lloyd din't pick Andy for the doubles considering the outcome of the Austria tie. Although Goodall and Hutchins did play together for a couple of years until Ross decided to focus solely on doubles while Goodall still wanted to have a singles career.

I would prefer Andy in the doubles, it would make me feel more confident of winning the tie but i think what could happen is Andy might decide not to play in the future because he has to play 3 best of 5 matches all the time. Lloyd has to try something different to see if he can get a doubles team without relying on Andy. I dont think it can be done but well see.

On top of Andy and Ross Hutchins I'd like to see Evans and Fleming to get in.
Fleming eyes spot on Davis Cup team.

Why, because Fleming's Scottish? The best team would be Evans and Goodall, with Evans only there to gain experience and play any dead rubbers.
