But Russia is most definitely no angel.

Well exactly; like others have said, Chechnya and oil are two MAJOR issues. Putin is a nasty man. But essentially, what he said about America is fairly accurate imo.

I know my Government is not gonna nuke without reason..so yes I TRUST the British Government with our Nuclear Weapons.

They had a reason, Argentina invaded our sovereign territory.

So the use of nuclear weapons could be considered a second strike in defence of the United Kingdom or its dependants and therefore argued that it was justifiable.

The International Court of Justice did not give an advisory opinion on the legality of the threat or use of nuclear weapons until 1996, well after the Falklands conflict/war so NW would  still be considered an option at that time.

Putin's style of leadership is particularly interesting. From what i know, he has made use of terror under a cloud of 'legality'. I dont know how seperate his attitudes and ideals are to former Soviet leaders.

We knew not to use them in a war that we won.

The USSR did not use them in a war that they lost.

So why do you not credit the former USSR / Russia responsible ownership of nuclear weapons?

I have worked at RNAD Coulport for the last 22 years on Polaris / Trident / Successor and have a bit more knowledge on the subject than yourself. If the conflict was going the wrong way Thatcher was prepared to use tactical nuclear devices.

The USSR did not use them in a war that they lost.

So why do you not credit the former USSR / Russia responsible ownership of nuclear weapons?

I dont know what your saying. Because all I am saying is I trust my government with Nukes.  So..the Soviets did not use nukes in Afganistan. No reason to. Gorbachev was smarter than that.

He's saying that it's not so amazing that we didn't use nukes for a war we were winning, so nothing special there. Infact we were prepared to use nukes if we started losing the war. But he's also saying that Russia deserves even more respect because they didn't use a nuke for a war they were losing therefore showing themselves to be a trustworthy country with nukes, maybe even more trustworthy than us.

I did not even know Nukes where on the table in the Falklands. That is just stupid. This is just the way I look at it...Mikhail Gorbachev was a very sensible man. He would never use nukes for a stupid reason like the 1980s Afgani war. I do not trust Putin. Putin is President of Russia and has power to use Russias force...so I do not trust Russia with Nukes or anything. Just my opinion. I am getting to the stage where I cant show my opinion. AL1874 attacks it no matter what.

not that it bothers me...

What is that meant to mean? AL1974 is attacking your opinions from side of experience and direct involvement, making his word a lot more reputable than any of ours at this time.

Also I agree Putin should not be trusted.

You said “you were not too sure with trusting them with nukes”, I was only trying to ascertain your reason for the opinion as I hold the opposite view.

Putin did not manoeuvre himself in to the position of Russian President with being foolish, I believe that Putin would not be prepared to use nuclear weapons in much the same way I believe the other four permanent members of the united nations security council would not be prepared to use them.

There is nothing personal in this and I sorry you feel it as an attack, it was not meant in that manner and if it came across as such I apologise.

Maybe I am just nuts. Sorry. I should Respect your opinion. I would trust Russia a LOT more than I would trust Iran. We can NOT trust Iran and they must not be allowed to gain nukes.

Iran probably won't but that is irrelevant now, America will attack Iran regardless of whether they want/get a nuke or not. This decision was most likely decided back before the Iraq war happened.

It's quite clear America don't consider a irresponsible country having nukes as a genuine reason for invading a country... just look at North Korea, that's a mockery of this apparent stance on countries with nukes.
