Mark, the other day I tried to install Babylon Translation, but couldn't do so because I got a message saying "Babylon error.  The strings.dat file is missing or corrupted."  This message now appears on the desktop every time I boot up.  As I haven't the faintest idea what this is, is it something I should be seeing my computer man about?  And if it's nothing to worry about how can I get rid of this message.  Installing Babylon isn't an absolute necessity.

I've never used the application you are referring to... but I'd first uninstall, see if it gets rid of the message, then reinstall.

If that makes no difference, then you need to manually remove the entry from the Windows' list of start-up applications:

Start Menu > Run > msconfig > Start Up

Find something that refers to Babylon or strings.dat and uncheck.

I only tried to install Babylon to see what it's like, as I have done with a lot of things out of curiosity, provided of course I feel happy about what I'm doing.  If I don't understand something, then I don't touch it.  Some applications I've kept and others I've successfully uninstalled. I tried to uninstall Babylon after the message appeared during the installation process, but this message still keeps appearing.

I'll try to get rid of this manually, but I don't understand your instructions as I can't find this process on the Start Menu.  Sorry, but my knowledge of computer technology is very limited.  I only went on a 10 week beginners course and after that I just taught myself with a little help from the computer manual.

Install an application called CCleaner, it might be able to fix it for you if you do the various maintenance tasks (clean up & registry).

You can also easily enable/disable the various applications that are scheduled to start up with Windows, maybe your thing might be listed there.

Will try doing this.

Re your instructions, there are no buttons on my main Start Menu, just a list of a few programmes which were put there when the computer was upgraded, and "Run" isn't one of them.

It's there somewhere, just got to find it but forget about those instructions, you don't need them if you use CCleaner as it also allows you to disable start-up operations.

Crap Cleaner is magic.  Also, since I started to use FF my whole system runs quicker. I don't profess to know a lot about IT, but not using IE has worked for me.

Thanks for telling me about this.  Will try it out later this evening.  I found FF a bit quicker than IE, but now I've got broadband it's irrelevant.  For whatever reason I just didn't take to FF.

OK - have installed this, and run it, but unfortunately the message is still appearing.  Maybe I'll just have to live with it?

Also I've found from CCleaner that "Run" in Start Menu is in Windows Explorer, not Internet Explorer.

Thanks Mark. Installed crap cleaner which proceeded to clean out 54 MB of stuff.  Hopefully this will speed things up Smile.

Load up CCleaner > Tools > Startup > Have a good look down the 'File' column and disable any references to strings.dat or Babylon in that list.

Not that it matters now as you have CCleaner but I stick by what I said from the start, the Run button can be found in the Start Menu, here is the proof: lol

If it doesn't show for you like the above images then someone has been customising your Windows.

It will probably hog less of the memory. Norton is infamous for using up so much memory it is unreal.
