So it's turned on this morning, but I suspect it may be on it's way out - SO can anyone recommend (1) a good but not crazy expensive external hard drive and (2) a good but not crazy expensive laptop or notebook? TA

I've got Dell but it's really old now, but it's used constantly with not many problems over the years! I paid almost £300 to get a new screen a while back, rather than get a new cheaper model. It's a laptop! Invisible man got a new Dell a few months back and Nigel likes his Sony Viao........hopefully they'll tell you what they think! Good luck!

If you go back to page 13 on this thread, there's a conversation about new computers that might help!

I used to have an Inspiron, but it was a bit of a beast.
I'm currently sat in PC World transferring all my data onto an external hard drive. And have been for over 3 hours. SO COLD.
Thoughts chaps - if it's going to cost me £150+ to fix the hard drive, should I just buy a new laptop? Mine is currently 2 1/2 years old and has a tendency to get very hot....

From experience I had a hard drive die after about 2 years, had it replaced under warranty and new one lasted 3 weeks until it died so then had it replaced again. The laptop was a nightmare to use after all that but I had a 3 year warranty so stuck with it while it could still be repaired for free and went and bought a new one the day the warranty expired.
So IMO, if you're going to have to pay out about 25% or so of the price of a new one (based on quick look at current Dell UK prices for what I've got as an indicator) for the repair, and considering it will almost certainly not be the last repair you'll have to pay out for in the next year, you're better off looking into a new one (if your financial situation allows of course).

I'm giving up on my MacBook.
Says that it's going to take 1 whole day to download LionOSX. And meanwhile it's killing my browsing.

Anyone know why I keep being directed to a windows media player file when I try to open the atp tour website, livescores, or one of the the other official tennis websites? It's happening at home and at work. Doesn't happen all the time but enough to start getting on my wick!
