Phillip has suggested the idea of having a feature that allows you to rate individual posts. It just so happened a third-party modification for this forum software exists that allows you to vote up posts and then you can see by the number of votes how popular that post is. You can also browse the week's most voted up posts.

This at first sounds like a good idea but also appreciate that there may be negative implications.  I happen to use a forum that has this system and it can sometimes feel like a popularity contest with people voting up those who they like regardless of what they say. The plus side is it can be very useful when you want to make sure you don't miss those quality posts.

I'm willing to try and implement this system as an experiment lasting a few weeks and then have a second vote to see if it should be kept.

Vote away!

Thanks Mark for giving this a poll.  You are a star.

I got this idea when I stumbled upon a post which gave a really useful method on how to detect a two way mirror to prevent being observed unwittingly in a hotel.  Also, I notice from my experience that embedded in various threads, useful ideas or enlightening news articles (quite a few related to Andy) that for various reasons are located in threads which are not directly related to the topic within the post.  As a result, people miss these gems as they do not enter into these threads.

I believe there are many valuable gems offered by our MW members which are hidden in different threads that can easily be overlooked.  Being able to see these gems would be a great benefit without having to trawl through the hundreds of posts embedded in the numerous threads available that would be very time consuming and not guaranteed to be detected either.

Yup, it works very well to show up the high quality posts that would otherwise be missed by many... that's the positive. The negative is something I've personally experienced which makes me concerned. It can start a lot of arguments and create many new enemies... whether that would happen here, I don't know.

With the forum I use, I'm glad it exists but I use that forum purely for information gathering rather than socialising so this is probably why I like it there.

Don't they have like a 'thanking' feature on the Other Site? Like if someone posts something really useful about rankings or timings, you can thank them for the post. Maybe that's more of a happy medium?

Would everyone be able to view the posts that received the thanks ?   Can it be made that all thanked posts can be viewed in a thanks thread so people don't have to search for them ?

If yes, then that probably will work better because there is less chance for back scratching when you are thanking someone.  Bias becomes clearly obvious when a thanks is given for a post that has little value.

Over there has the same issue, the popular people seem to get an unfair number of thanks. This can cause a lot of tension in arguments. The question is, is it worth it

Well is there anyway of limiting it to only certain sections of the forum. If it's not in playground or chit chat maybe less of the popularity contests will go on?

Do it like MTF does it. You can't spam rep people. You have to spread it around before you can rep that person again.

Mmm. It's quite hard because on the other hand, there are people who post virtually only useful information. Do you end up having to just randomly rep people before you can rep a genuinely useful post, because that seems kind of stupid.

I think so too, but everyone seems concerned that certain people will be spam repped.

Maybe one solution is the ability to vote for/thank someone at most once every [24] hours to avoid the spamming that James is referring to.

Well does something annoying/magical happen if you get repped?

Or what about only being allowed one vote per thread per day?
