Please don't encourage a discussion on free will - it has to be one of the most pointless topics of discussion you can have. Frown

You don’t understand, dearest. If we are not responsible for our actions, then so is not Andy for his losses; therefore, Clydey can’t possibly hold Andy responsible for his losses which he does quite often. Practice what you preach.

Mod NoticeMoved discussion and merged it here.

Do you suppose Andy is responsible for his losses?

Nope.

Presumably you're going to ask why I get mad when he isn't playing well, then?

You got me. That thought had never, ever occurred to me.

As usual, you miss the point, Emma Jean.

I'm not preaching anything. Not once have I said that everyone should just relax and take things as they come, since we're not responsible for any of it. The point is that we feel like we have free will. You cannot just ignore that feeling even though, when examined, it is an illusion.

There are many, many things that make no sense in light of the truth of determinism. For example, I take pride in my work, even if I am not ultimately responsible for it.

And I'm not sure how you can call the discussion pointless, Mark. It might be frustrating, but lack of free will has consequences.

I mean on a personal level, it's just pointless thinking about it and getting upset about it. Best to just ignore it.

But I understand there are some important discussion points such as criminal punishment.

Exactly.

To be honest, Emma Jean's whole world view just pisses me off because it's so devoid of logic. I mean, offering up Deepak Chopra as an example of intellectual enlightenment?

No idea what that means. If you mean free will, I already explained why.

Do people just not bother reading? Your comment makes no sense if you actually read my previous post.

Clydey.. genuine question:

My dear son has failed all his exams, and is currently on suspension from Uni.

We (Son, Hubbster & I) are currently doing a recon mission to see where it all went belly-up. It has emerged, as part of this process, he wants to complete this degree but is frightened of failure. It has also emerged that he did not have the appropriate supports in place for him to succeed.
btw.. We support him 100%.

Where do we start on the whole Free Will sh*t?

Sorry to hear that. I can imagine how he must feel right now.

I doubt me droning on about the illusion of free will is going to do you much good.

What supports did he lack?
