Free will

Did I just read someone say that we choose our genes? Nah, must be because I'm tired.
Aye, tired of this subject.......we can talk about this subject until we die, and with all the free will in the world ,it won't help you to escape that.

You clearly don't get this.

Every choice you make is a product of prior causes. You are a product of biology and environment. They make up who you are and every decision you make is a consequence of those two factors. And you weren't responsible for either of them.

Give me an example of a single choice you could make or action you could take that is not the result of your genes or your environment.

It's a simple request. I'm asking for just one. If you can give me one, you have done what no one in history has been able to do and disproved determinism.
You're right - I don't get that being a product of my genes and environment deprives me of a significant degree of free will in choosing courses of action. I believe the combination of these two factors actually enhances my ability to evaluate and choose between different destinies of broadly equivalent validity.

The choices you make are a result of those factors, though. There may be multiple choices in front of you at any given time, but your genes and environment determine which of those choices you will ultimately make. There is even evidence that choices are made before we are even consciously aware of having made them.

Do you understand what I'm saying yet?

Oh funny I think that too, same as Caz! That we choose our own genes and who we are Smile

Only thing is who were we when we chose our genes, when we didn't have our genes to that point to determine who we were? Hmmmmm boggles the mind.

Clydey.. I were to parade the street where I live naked, or buy a gun, or poison my neighbour's dog, or laugh at a homeless person - none of which I would do (but could) - doesn't this mean I have some degree of free will?

As far as I am aware, none these thoughts/actions are inherent to my genetic makeup - but I can vehemently confirm this had no part in my environmental makeup.
