That would depend. If it's windy, you have to think about it, I suppose. But the main objective is to stand out from average people, which hardly lets you forget it.

In my uninformed opinion I don’t think it really makes that much difference in as much as it is your faith that is important.

I'd say that although everyone agrees that the definition of a Jew is not entirely racial (since converts are accepted, as well as some children of mixed marriages, depending on which parent is Jewish, or how they're brought up), the facts on the ground are that the vast majority of Jews are from a single race, or at least a subset of a race. So, although 'Jew' is not entirely racial in definition, like 'black' is, Jewish people are virtually all one race. But I'm not an expert on these things.

Tricky one this - you could argue that  in terms of "race", the original Jews or Hebrews were Semites, as are Arabs, and that "Jew" is a religious rather than racial label.  Hence Yamor's point that converts are accepted as Jews, regardless of ethnicity.  That said, once a person became a Jew they were expected to isolate themselves from Gentiles (non-Jews), in particular when it came to marriage so over the generations a characteristis physiology has developed that marks people out as "looking" Jewish.  There is clearly also a very strong cultural identity amoungst secular Jews as well - but maybe that is comparable to the sense of identity felt by non-practising Catholics?

Not sure where I was going with this... Think  Interesting topic though - Mark is clearly a deeper thinker than we give him credit for... Very Happy

There is actually another difference between Jews and non-Jews besides looks - diseases. There are a few hereditory diseases which virtually only Jews (or more accurately, ashkenazi Jews) get. In fact before having children, a lot of Jews get tested to make sure that both partners aren't carriers of those diseases, like Tay-Sachs.

Why are people intent on picking one over the other?

You can be of Jewish ethnicity or you can subscribe to Judaism. You have to distinguish between the two.

For example, you can be an atheist Jew or you can subscribe to Judaism and not have Jewish ancestry.

Obviously, you can be both at the time as well.

And things continue to get confusing for me...

First I seem to think Jews are a race >> then Cate publicly mocks me for thinking that is the case >> then 'one2watch', who's a Jew, tells me that everyone in this thread decided that Jews were a race >> and in bed last night Cate says you're all wrong because Jews were only once a race but due to the type of converts and how long it has been, Jews are no longer a race. doh

After all this debate, if I had to pick a choice so far... I would change my original opinion and actually say Jews are no longer a race but frankly I'm mostly on the fence here.
