So whats the routine for stopping at some lights if you was like 3rd gear. Just brake, stop in neutral then start off again in gear 1, then 2, then 3 or what ... this is what I panick about
This is what a driving insturctor is for ...
You should be having lessons ....

I think you could be endangering yourself trying to do it any other way .... unless you had a very experienced person to sit with you instead of lessons.

Well, this is what your instructor is for, or at the very least, a friend or relative that KNOWS how to teach you to drive, not just thinks they can because they passed there test x years ago.
For me, in 3rd gear, I'd use the brakes to slow me down as I approached, clutch down at the revs get lower, come to a stop, apply the handbrake, into neutral. Then into first when the lights start to change and up to the biting point, release handbrake, and off you go.

Well I can't drive without an experienced driver anyway. I'd never go out on my own. Couldn't you get into trouble driving alone on a provisional?
I wanted lessons so that I'm in a duel control car and someone else can intervein if all goes tits up. At least til I've got some confidence.

Lol your car would be seized and you'd have to pay to get it back or it would be crushed. Plus you would get points.

When I said I thought you could be endangering yourself trying to do it in any other way, I meant by getting advice from a forum. You need to have either an instructor or an experienced driver giving you lessons. And, yes, you cannot go on the road without being accompanied by someone who has a current driving license.

And who is at least 21 years of age, and has held their licence for a minimum of 3 years.

What? I have a provisional technically until I'm 18, but I can drive alone.
I'm legally only allowed to have one other person other than family in the car, but that's the extent of my restrictions.

I'm just trying to get my head around it coz it'll be a few weeks (hopefully) until I can actually get lessons. And by talking about it gets me interested.

Driving laws are much much stricter here and most people drive manuals anyway.

Unfortunately. They didn't actually teach you how to drive, they threw me the book and told me to study. What I actually did for my hours was watch videos of teenagers getting decapitated and killed from drinking recklessly/drunk.

So, who was it taught you how to drive? Interestingly that they showed horror videos ... did it work? Do you think you will be a better driver having seen videos like that? (I'm always curious about how effective this type of thing is).

My grandfather. After you take the written test at the end of your driver's ed, you have a provisional license that lets you drive with one person in the passenger seat (I guess that's what Amy's referring to). After six months at 16 and a half, you take the actual exam to get an actual provisional license, which is what I have until I'm 18.
The videos didn't help much. Most people know and have heard of fatal car accidents. I don't think making me want to puke made me a better driver. It's kind of like telling someone, "This is what happens when you do something bad" but not telling someone how to do it right. Sure, it made me fearful, but I could have been just as reckless and fearful without my grandfather having taught me how to properly drive.
