No, it was very eloquent, and not at all offensive. They're your opinions.

But you're speaking from a position of someone who has such faith and belief. If you lose it, its difficult to find an alternative. Surely the whole point of a 'big' question is that it is big. This question is infinetely big, it could a lifetime to define beliefs - they're very personal things. Its hard to have a definitive opinion on such things at the age of 18 - for me anyway. Of course I've thought about it - I'm sure everybody thinks about it - but coming to conclusions is much harder. I sit in evensong every Sunday and question my beliefs. Maybe that seems hypocritical - what am I doing in a church service if I'm not a Christian? Argh, I don't know...its difficult to explain. Theres no proof for anything; its easy to expand your knowledge, easy to ask the questions, but harder to find answers. Like you say, it requires faith. Not everyone has it.

.you surely must be inclined to believe one thing that you think more evidence points to than the rest and if you dont i would say u havent really looked at the issue at all otherwise you would have an opinion

Yes there are some arguments that make more sense but they all cancel each other out, if that makes sense dontknow So i still am agnostic...... and i wouldn't say that just because i don't have a definitive view means that i haven't looked at the issue - because, well at least for me this is something that i am personally really interested in, and i have read/thought/wrote loads on it. I've been brought up as a Christian, but as i've got older i just don't think it's anything that can ever be answered, there's no proof to make anything certain, but anyway everyone entitled to their own opinion  hug

oh and also - annie its quite ironic that you have such a strong disagreement on what ur saying agnosticism is when ur talking about it being when you cant know something for definite. by the very nature of language we can know the meaningwords for definte as they were created to express a certain thing and in fact ur definition was closer than mine (according to the chambers dictionary an agnostic is someone who believes that one can only know about material things and so believes that nothing can be known about the existence of god). however i still have problems with thuis as religion isnt about knowledge its about belief, so really what i said before applies (about not searching for ur beliefs to fundamental questions)

sorry i keep on writing posts and while im writing them more get posted. i would say that at any one time you do have beliefs and opinions on any subject and even for ppl who associate themselves with a religiong this is an ever changing thing and you wont always agree with what other people who say they conform to the same set of beliefs does. however i think the very fact that someone questions the existence of god means by defintion they could not be an agnostic

If we're going to take it into a question of definition rather than a religious debate...

Agnostic.
1.One who believes that it is impossible to know whether there is a God.
2.One who is skeptical about the existence of God but does not profess true atheism.

In order to think that its impossible to know whether there is god, surely you have to question your own beliefs in whether there is a god and look closely at the 'existence' of god - before coming to the conclusion that its impossible to know.
Likewise, if you're sceptical about it, you have to base that scepticism on some knowledge of your own questions about the existence of god.

Surely a fundamental element in being agnostic therefore is questioning the existence of god?

Might have completely missed the point here...

Hmmm interesting thought Arka. Religion is a powerful sociological and pychological force - it has great power to reinforce and reassure as well as to divide.
The problem is surely extremism and not religion; people manipulating religion to suit their own ends.

the thing is that ur defintions could be seen as contradictory. i could quite easily say by that that im a christian and an agnostic -i believe in god but believe its impossible to know whether there is a god (im not saying i do but trying to illustrate my point)- therefore it cant really be counted as a religion. where did u get those definitions from cos i think the second one is the sort of non-thinking description that i think is stupid. basically even just reading the defintions makes me think even more that agnosticism is either in the case of ur (1) not really a strong belief system but rather a term which prob applies to everyone except the most ardent evangelists, even those who profess to be of some religious faith or ur (2) see most of my previous posts on this subject.
hope u feel better soon annie - i tend to make discussions far more complex than is necessary and then not express myself very well so im not surprised if i dont make sense to ppl

But religion is horribly flawed. People often forget that religion is a work of man and not God, and so it is bound to be tainted.

and i would agree with lauras view not arkas. something i strongly believe is that there are very few religious wars, instead there are those who use religion as an excuse for war and violence
