But they weren't viable industries! They were producing low-grade steel, the mines had no seams, the cars were crap, the shipyards were losing money. Businesses, whether run by the state or private concerns, don't exist for the benefit of the employees. They exist to produce quality products and/or services that turn a profit. This, to me, is what the Left can't get its head around.
Ravenscraig (I don't know about the others) produced steel of the highest quality. Some mines were running out of "easier" seams, much like the oil industry now. The cars were crap. The shipyards needed to change. I still say we needed someone with intelligence to sort things out. Instead we got Thatcher. She didn't seem to mind subsidising the farming industry.
