My shoulder is in knots where my chronic back problem is strangling the nerves in my back giving me a throbbing stabbing pain down the right side of my back with stabbing pains down my right arm with tingling in my fingers Frown

I know nerve problems can be horribly painful, so good luck with that!

Problem is that the damage to my back is permanent Frown so I'm very careful with it but when it flares up there's little I can do to halt it. Which means on top of it being freezing here today my hand has been cold anyway (since the nerve damage prevents my hands internal thermostat from working)
So far not too bad but getting to the stage where I will have to cave an start taking painkillers again (which might mean I become less lucid lol )

Hazel, did you have an accident, or is this something congenital?  Apologies if you have told us before.

Thanks guys...

btw Familydoctor.org is an absolutely fantastic website, just in case no one uses it.

Too much studying...sad thing is I'm not joking lol
When I was 16 when I was doing my highers I obviously had bad posture and studied for too long in the same position and didn't realise how tense I was getting. Over the Christmas hols I was waking with shooting pains in my wrist but thought it was the way I was sleeping.
Went back and in the first week back got shooting pains up and down in my arm in the middle of class.
Went to the doctor and they thought it was repetitive strain, after weeks of physio wasn't improving. Basically my tied up back was making my wrist worst and my wrist was making my back worse Frown
So eventually my back was loosened up again but it went on months and months so it damaged the nerves in my back and they are really sensitive. So my muscles tense up really easily and my nerves get sore.
It's played up twice majorly while I was at uni, lasting several months each time, meaning physio and tons of strong painkillers both times Frown

That sounds grim, Hazel.  Do you have regular massages?  They can help immensely with tension in your back.

Not since I came home, I have a regime of exercises I do daily to look after it. Problem is I can't afford it and the NHS physios send you packing once your recovered. TBH my back hasn't played up since 4th year so about 2 years now (crumbs)

If you ever can afford them, then massages will help.  Also an Osteopath can work wonders.  I have the number of a really good one here in Aberdeen.  He really is a miracle worker.  Can't praise him highly enough.  I have a lower back problem that flares up from time to time.  One visit to this guy, and I'm as right as rain.

I spent the money on private physio in Aberdeen the last time before I got referred to NHS, they're wonderful people yes but a bit of the torturer in them too lol
Also knew a pile of physio students as friends and they used me as practice Smile
Never getting acupuncture ever again though...passed out in the middle of the street after the last time I had that!

Really?  I've never had acupuncture, but it's good to explore other remedies and find what works for you.  For me, an osteopath is way better than a physio.

Sorry to hear that Hazel, back problems are very unpleasant and one of my own stops me walking too far these days without stopping to lean on my stick, but I'm so much older than you. I'm sure as time goes on you will learn how to manage it and find ways to lessen its effect and, who knows, some new discovery could cure it.  Has anyone heard how Mark is feeling now?
