US officials are investigating how a child was apparently allowed to direct planes at New York's JFK airport - one of the country's busiest.
The probe comes after an audiotape caught the boy directing several pilots preparing for take-off last month.
The boy was apparently with his father - a certified air traffic controller. BBC News - New York airport jets 'directed by child'Brother one day, sister the other. You can clearly hear the dad giving his daughter the message to relay. Clearly not the best decision the dad made but blown a little out of proportion. Obviously as slow news week

I know, I was just being .... British Well I confess I sometimes refer to my southern neighbours in the same manner when my Scottishness comes to the fore ... no offence intended Brother one day, sister the other. You can clearly hear the dad giving his daughter the message to relay. Clearly not the best decision the dad made but blown a little out of proportion. Obviously as slow news week Agree. When I thought about it logically, it had to be assumed that Daddy was telling the kid what to say, although no other voice could be heard in the news reports here. And the pilots clearly knew what was going on. Still a bit spooky though.

You can't trust a child to relay that information accurately, what if the boy said it wrong and then the pilot suddenly had a communication problem... could maybe cause a crash? No risks should ever be taken with air travel.

Totally agree. I've a cousin who's an aircraft controller at Heathrow and he says this man really was playing with human lives. As well as a possible communication problem, if there had been some other sudden emergency, in a tense situation where split-second decisions are vital, how quickly could this controller have responded? His mind certainly wasn't 100% on the job. Hope he's discovered and sacked.

It really wasn't international news though, and that was my blown out of proportion comment.

So yes it was controversial and only time will tell how it works...but by this the Obama administration has proved it can follow through on it's agenda. I know Tommy will disagree but well done Obama and the House of Representatives + bravo Obama team !

Republicans would rather see more money being put into the defense systems/military than free healthcare.

It baffles me how you can be against the concept of universal healthcare (not that the new bill provides that, but it's a start). Stupid yanks.

There really are a lot of odd people over there. Vested interests, I suppose, simple as that. As well as a base fear of anything that might be vaguely socialist in any way. There's talk of Palin running for President in 2012 - god help us all if she gets it.
