Courage isn't absence of fear but mastery of it.

Never underestimate first-graders.
That's a really heart-warming story Zarfeen, so thanks for sharing.

It seems that Councillor Brewer is considering resigning -

I'd like to suggest that he does so before he's forced to. Making the excuse that he was having an off-day just isn't good enough, and it should be warning to others, particularly people who hold positions of trust and authority, that offensive off-the-cuff comments can have serious and very upsetting repercussions.

Shocking news from South Africa, a poor, poor guy lost his life because he parked illegally. Nobody in the police has been suspended. Ordinary people are afraid of the police. 43 people a day die from shooting.
What a horrible violent society.

Is this the same man that was dragged behind the police van and shot and beaten?

I know I'm paranoid. But am I paranoid enough?

And Mark Petchey chooses to bring his kids up there.

I have a relative who actually chooses to work and live there, and he's married with two teenage children. Their house and garden are surrounded by a high barbed wire fence, and two rottweilers are on constant patrol. They never go out anywhere after dark and the kids are taken by an armed chaperone to school and when they go to visit their friends.
What kind of a life is that? I just don't get it.

Armed chaperone? Whoa...that is so bad.
No safety at all I guess.

^Really hope they can find a cure for this, and hope the baby goes on to live a healthy life.
When I had my bone marrow transplant, I was told I was being treated the same as someone who was suffering from AIDS.
Zero white count.
Sobering stuff.
I have developed a very healthy respect of viruses.
This is what stood out to me in the article:
Until scientists better understand how they cured the child, Gay emphasised that prevention is the most reliable way to stop babies contracting the virus from infected mothers.
"Prevention really is the best cure, and we already have proven strategies that can prevent 98% of newborn infections by identifying and treating HIV-positive women," she said.

I worry that the any potential cure will be so expensive, it'll be deemed worthless unless you're Bill Gates. Thanks to capitalism and all that jazz.
Unfortunately, those proven strategies only work in countries where the medicine/health-care is readily available.

The Councillor in this case did resign in the end, and quite right too. What a pathetic example of humanity he is.

Quite frightening that he got into the position he did in the first place. There are no words...
