My son is adamant I should not give my spare change to the Salvation Army kettle folks who hang out in force at this time of year.

Emma Jean, what's with all these nonsensical quotes you keep putting in your signature about materialism?

I would love to see someone make a compelling case that consciousness is independent of the brain, given that everything that we currently know about conscious experience is connected to the brain.

Depends how you define consciousness, I guess - ice is conscious of its surroundings when it melts as temperature rises. You could say its a matter of degree (!)

Clydey.. you know I'm not religious, so this is a genuine and maybe strange and hypothetical question:

Imagine a healthy, human brain, independent of a human body, being kept artificially 'alive' with functioning nerves, blood flow, oxygen, nutrients etc.

Do you think it would be possible for the brain to experience consciousness?

We are our brain, so yes. The absence of the body would have fewer consequences than you might think.

I can't see how any kind of response has to be 'concious'! A falling leaf may move aound in response to the wind, but would you call that concious?
