Wouldn't be to do with changing from BT to Sky would it? Think  If thats the case I really don't understand how it can be any different.

I don't think it'll be anything to do with an upgrade at the exchange, or a switch from BT to Sky, because such a slow download speed which you said you had still doesn't make sense. I think its more likely there was some technical problem at the time, or an extraordinary load at the time.

Its so bizarre.  Whenever there was any videos posted on here I'd have to have one window open specially for loading that while I looked through the rest of the site because it took so long.  Now I can watch long videos without having to wait.

Sky broadband runs through BT's lines and exchanges anyway... so technically there's really no difference...

So how do Virgin have different speeds to BT? Do they run their own network?

Yes, they run on cables that are designed for broadband rather than phones, and therefore usually give better speed and reliability.
