Snow in Wellington!

Quote

Not sure it deserves its own topic but what the heck! It's snowing here in Wellington, absolutely pelted down this evening. Never happened here before. They have had sleety showers but never snow this heavy. It's a big polar blast from Antarctica that's gradually moving up the country. I was almost crying with excitement when I went outside, haven't seen snow since I was 3 years old (21 years ago) and still living in England.

Some photos I took from in and outside my house:

Hey.....Is that you in the pics?     Have you built a snowman yet or had a snowball fight? Go on.....you know you want to! Very Happy

That is indeed me. Haven't made a snowman, not sure the snow is quite heavy enough for that yet but yes there have been snowballs thrown and hit with. Smile

This kind of snow is supposed to be a once in a lifetime thing in Wellington.

Pelted down again this morning although seems to be calm now. It's exciting but got to get into town for an interview in a couple of hours so hopefully there's no problems (one of the bus routes around here is already cancelled).

My daughter reported light snow showers in Cambridge on the way to school this morning.  Closest I got to seeing the snow was on Pirongia (nearby mount).

Great pics Alex.  Quite a few in the office haven't seen falling snow (though have seen settled snow on Mt Ruapehu).

It's been pelting down all day and is now absolutely bucketing down like a blizzard. Reckon we might be snowed in tomorrow.

It was ok thanks. Wasn't really a formal interview. This guy, a manager at Ministry of Economic Development had been sent my CV (I'm not sure by whom) and needed someone for about 10 weeks for a specific project. Seemed keen to progress with me but didn't even have approval from HR to hire someone yet so am waiting to hear back. Only 10 weeks work but would at least be something to put on the CV instead of continuing to sit around here doing nothing.

Anyway it was pretty clear this morning and much of the snow started to clear away but it's hailing quite heavy now and another heavy downfall of snow is expected overnight tonight.

I've put quite a few photos on Facebook for those who use it but here's a few more as a taster. All from our back garden this morning.

You can see how heavy it was by how much settled on the table in the garden. About 2 to 3 inches:

Also this is the first snow in Wellington since the 70s and they even had a little bit in Auckland yesterday! First time for 70 years.

Yep.......ain't that the truth! Still, it must be great for all those folks who've never seen it before!

Indeed but this is the first snow here for 40 years. Most people here have never seen snow in their lives until now which is why it's been amazing and exciting.
