I didn't deny that creative works do not happen in isolation, or that they are not inspired by the works of others, but you're ignoring my conclusion that the end result is down to the unique, and therefore singular, perception and interpretation of the individual, since no two people will preceive or interpret in the same way.  If, as I believe to be the case, that perception and interpretation are unique to every individual, then the end result of that which has inspired or stimulated a genius to carry a work of art or an invention to it's ultimate fulfilment or conclusion is also unique, and is therefore singular.

They are not just inspired the works of others. They occur because of the works of others. They cannot possibly happen without those works. Therefore, their ideas are not a product of their singular genius.

That is irrelevant because how we interpret things is the result of our experiences, our biology, etc. The way we interpret things is not innate. How we think is directly influenced by others. That is why there is no such thing as singular genius. There's an easy way to prove this. You give me one example of something that resulted from one person's singular genius and I'll give you a list of people who were involved in the production of that idea.

I quite like the idea of what James is saying.

At work, we have a System Architect who is a genius.  He writes many technical papers himself on topics to start off the design work, as well as pull together all ideas into a System Architecture SUMMARY document greater than 400 pages long.  He leads most if not all the major technical development threads for a team of hundreds of engineers across many countries.  The product we are producing is a unique Satcom system delivering new and vital communication services across parts of the world never served before.

Of course, the System Architect is clever enough to learn and do everything himself but if he does then it would take so long that we will never deliver a system to the customer !

What I like about James point is that as I visibly contribute to a part of the system design, interface definition, integration, testing, ... I am part of the collective genius, and hence I am a minor genius whereas the System Architect is also a collective Genius but a much more major one lol
