Agree with you all on this one... It's horrible and makes me feel homicidal when it's done in public places But on clay, when it's very windy, I don't know what else they can do? Darling Thanx so much Mark. He's gonna make an appearance on Cincy topic.

If you can comfortably play with the second serve ball in one pocket, then put a handkerchief or tissue in the other pocket and USE IT. What these sportsmen do is an unhygienic HABIT. I doubt they'd do it in their own garden.

Filthy dirty habit. I agree they should keep a tissue in one pocket and put the ball in the other. Very poor examples for the young kids.

Perhaps no but it is not nice to spit. He does it quite frequently.

I've never noticed any of them doing that! Ugh! How disgusting! They get plenty of breaks, so there's really no excuse! If they can't use a hanky, they should damn well swallow it!

On clay they all do, but I don't notice it much anywhere else. Wind whips the clay up into every orifice and must be horrible. I forgive them...but only on clay.

If they're spitting clay out of their mouth........that's OK!

Caz, I think they are just spitting clay I look at clay and think what a horrible, old fashioned surface it is, sweeping it, watering it, no hawkeye, blowing in the wind (must be a song there ) and I wonder, why on earth is it used Must be cheap I guess or just tradition

I think, probably tradition! They should do away with it! The damn stuff gets everywhere!

Yesterday it was pleasing to see Wozniacki daintily blowing her nose into a handkerchief whilst seated between end changes. I have to say I HAVE seen AM using tissues at similar times, so he's not all bad <g>

I'm guessing those who are criticising athletes for spitting don't do much exercise? Go run on a treadmill for fifteen minutes and see if you have the impulse to spit or not.

Have done and absolutely no impulse to do such a thing.

The main reason athletes do it is because of excess mucus being expelled from the lungs. However, there are people who just do it randomly in the street, which is pretty disgusting.
