The beginning of a pandemic?

Governments around the world are hurrying to contain the spread of a new swine flu virus after outbreaks were reported in Mexico, the US and Canada.

At least 100 people are now suspected to have died of the disease in Mexico.

The UN has warned the virus has the potential to become a pandemic, but said the world was better prepared than ever to deal with the threat.

Stocks of anti-viral medicines are being readied and travellers are being screened at some airports for symptoms.

World moves to contain flu spread

And it's a waste of time wearing a face mask unless you change it as soon as it becomes wet.  There are 2 folk in hospital up here at the minute, they came back from Mexico about a week ago and are now showing flu like symptoms but they haven't had the test results back yet so it might just be a cold.

Big news here as a group of school students have just got back from a trip to Mexico with flu symptoms and they reckon up to 13 of the 20 may test positive for this.
Haven't been to America since 1993 so typically this has to occur in the few weeks before I go to LA doesn't it?! nervous

Would a mass cull of pigs in Mexico help any of this? I know that people are starting to get it which is how its spreading quicker, but might as well get rid of the pigs first no?

I'm eager to talk to one of my brothers about this.  He's a vet and I'm interested to know what the take is on this from an official point of view when it comes to the animals involved.  Alas, he is on holiday at the moment.  Frown

At least the Scottish cases seem to be recovering - all the people tested so far that they've been in contact with are negative too I believe.

This is like the start of a sci fi horror film - small cases at first but before you know it, the world is left only to those few with resistance! lol
