With respect, Masaka.. I think you're painting with a rather broad brush by these comments. I hope you enjoyed your job.

Perhaps it's different here these days. I certainly have regular conversations like that amongst my ex colleagues. Incidentally for the purposes of doubt I was not in any way suggesting that ASD are in any way linked to poor parenting. I can see how you may have perceived a link, given the topic of discussion. However that link was not intended.  I freely admit to having doubts about ADHD, in some cases.  My personal view is that I believe that they can identify a genetic cause in about 1/7 cases. My own experience would suggest that that is about representative of the true cases I came across in the classroom.

As for ASD I am interested in what you think the causal factors maybe? Obviously there can be and probably are multiple factors involved, and I don't discount the continuum theory.

If I was a betting woman, which I am not I would put my shilling on:-

1) A link with premature births somewhere along the line.
2) The constant stimulation of our electrical gadget driven age, and it's subsequent effects on developing brains.
3) I also remain unconvinced that there is not link with vaccination damage somewhere. I rather think that the discredited research into this might well be Un discredited sometime in the future.

As for the second part of your post - did I enjoy my job? Not towards the end, partly because I was increasingly ill, and partly because the resourcing was so inadequate. The management strategy in the schools I worked in was essentially what the American's call "main dumping". Dump the children in the mainstream setting, with the minimum levels of support they can get away with, and hope for the best. The percentage of the prison population in the UK, with some form of Special Educational Need would testify to the failings of that approach.

I hope that you get any help you feel you need. Don't forget you are in good company. Hasn't Bill Gates the founder of Microsoft got the same diagnosis?

If you can face it do so. For some reason, probably because it comes out of a different pot, there seemed to be much more money available for student support.  Certainly when I was at Uni I was given additional funding for a new computer, and additional text books because clambering up a bloody great flight of steps to get into the Uni library was a no no sometimes. They will be more sympathetic than you think.

I hasn't to add this applied to UK universities about 20 years ago when I did my degree. It may be outdated by now. What are you studying? Don't also forget that the world would be well and truly screwed without people with ASD. By and large they are the innovators, the problem solvers, the people who can think out of the box.

I sincerely hope that you don't have any archaic and antiquated ideas of being ashamed about it? You sound quite down?

She thinks I have autism bro.
My future daughter-in-law is in her 2nd year of a 3-year doctorate in Educatiional Psychology, specialising in autism.   A couple of months ago she asked me to correct the grammar of her dissertation and re-type it for her.  It made very interesting reading.

This website is helpful http://www.hacsg.org.uk/ - I have known Sally Bunday for sometime.

I won't be needing that link because I don't have autism, thanks.

The link between diet and some of these disorders seems very logical to me.  It is perhaps one of the major things that has changed over the last half century. Perhaps it is not coincidental that the number of youngsters diagnosed with these type of conditions has increased in the same period.

I should also point out that my knowledge of these things is very out of date now. I am aware of the fact there are whole bodies of new research.

I should also point out that as an adult, I should have learnt by now that making the suggestion that there might possibly be any link between ADHD and parenting difficulties, is tantamount to throwing a lit firework into a box of dynamite - an unrelentingly stupid thing to do. I therefore retract any comments of that nature.

No Gangsta I am not suggesting you have ADHD either. My comment regarding autism with you was simply related to some of the difficulties you appear to have with accepting alternative view points. It is just as likely to be a feature of teenagers.

I will now definitely remove myself to an area of concrete, to stop myself digging any more holes...!!!

You know I don't mind you thinking I have it, I have a friend who has aspergers and he's the most intelligent guy in our year, straight A's and everything. So it can't be all bad.

Masaka I already have support for other learning difficulties: ADHD and dyspraxia. I will just update them about my aspergers.

It isn't bad at all in any shape or form.  It may cause some difficulties, but many other things also cause difficulties. The rigid black and white thought processes of some middle aged women, such as myself being a case in point.

I was tested for it when I was in my later years at primary school, I didn't come out with any diagnosis, and since then I haven't noticed any change in my behaviour or the way I learn etc. So I can't see me having it if I was tested again.

Well done. Things will get better. You have no idea how much I railed against my own disabilities when I was your age. I am far more philosophical about things now.  The ability to sit on my bottom and post on here at all hours, when my non disabled friends are trotting off to work each day, being one of the advantages. With regard to your difficulties getting a job, have you considered having ago at some form of voluntary work? It will get something on your CV which will help. If you are into computers volunteering to help with the computer equivalent of adult literacy lessons, might be interesting.

I think we would all be glad to see the back of it and I'm sorry I got sucked in.     In no way would I accuse Rafa or anyone else of taking drugs unless I had evidence.    I think he took off time off under false pretences and that was my argument with Gangsta, but that does not necessarily involve drug taking.    To me that is cheating and that is what I was discussing with Gangsta but his idea of cheating and mine are poles apart and that was mostly what our exchange was about.     I think we managed to disagree without insulting each other.    To me the only difference between Gangsta and Masaka in this exchange is the age difference.   Otherwise one was as bad as the other.
Actually, there is one other difference! Yesterday, Gangsta not only 'agreed to disagree', but he had the guts to stand up and apologise for the offence he had caused to certain members and I had half hoped that he might get a response in kind, but all he got was a load of half baked 'excuses' for the offence they had certainly caused! Not a very good example to set to young people in my book! Very disappointing!
