I know I'm paranoid. But am I paranoid enough?

My name is Nigel and I have a problem.

Last year, I had a year off booze. Completely. Not a drop. Not birthday, not Xmas.

While I never drank a lot before 2009, I did sink a few glasses most nights (at home). The plan with the alcobattical was to take a year off to prove I could discipline myself. In 2010, I was going to drink just at weekends.

Well now, here we are and I've welcomed it back like an old, long-lost friend. I sit here with a bottle of Spanish red in front of me on a Tuesday night knowing that Tuesday can only loosely be described as the weekend. In the same way that I can only loosely be described as being in my very, very late 30s.

So, my questions are: how much do YOU drink? How disciplined are you? Do you drink just at weekends? Do you think you're so young that it doesn't really matter (I'm not)? Are you worried about your health? Do you believe the government stats about weekly units? What do you think about binge-drinking? Do you drink at home or strictly when you're out?

And how much will you drink when Andy lifts that gong on Sunday?

I usually only drink on the very rare occasion where I attend a party, this is usually an annual event and I will get totally pissed, more so than everyone there.

Apart from that, on occasion I'll drink a few sips of someones' beer or even drink a whole one myself if it's given to me for whatever reason but I won't really enjoy it, it's more about curiosity.

Apart from that, I'll sometimes drink a bear if it's given to me for whatever reason but I won't really enjoy it, it's more about curiosity.

That must make you unique in 2010 Britain.

Hmm since I've moved back home I definitely drink a lot less. I tend to be pretty much a social drinker so wine with the occasional meal and then really when I go out.
Don't get drunk though. I've worked out what and how much I can drink and I stick to it. As a Christian I don't want to drink so much that my judgement is badly affected and also I don't see the point if it's going to make me ill Smile

However we are coming up to the 6 Nations season so my alcohol intake will probably go up a bit lol

I wish I could feel proud about it but I'm simply fortunate enough to not like the taste Smile

Apparently when I was very young, my sister made me have one of those horrible alcoholic chocolates, maybe that has something to do with it.

Hazel, you are almost the perfect person. I had the same ideals as you once. Didn't drink till I was 19. In other matters, I made it to 23 and nearly exploded.

Do you love to drink because of the taste or something else about it?

I drink far too much than is good for me.  Frown  And yes, I kid myself on that I'm still young enough to cope.   I alternate between being good girl/bad girl.  Can be disciplined when I put my mind to it, but can just as easily say, **** it, I deserve some time off.

It's interesting stuff, and I do think that some of us have addictive personalities.  Think

I suspect it may be a terrifying lack of confidence and being awkward socially. I have a few drinks and I suddenly have the power of conversation.

Emphasis on the almost lol
I drank from the time I was 17...so when I went to uni Smile Before that it was a glass of wine with a meal at home at most tender
The only times I've drank more than I should I've been very aware that I'm acting out of character.
Only time I've been really drunk was our night out after our last exam of my undergraduate. Started drinking at lunch in the pub, had a break and then started again about 7pm through till about 2am...wasn't fun the next morning Frown Especially since I had to get a train from Aberdeen to Edinburgh and had one of my tutors sat opposite me laughing at my pain Smile

Exact same reason I do it, lucky I have a gf and therefore don't feel the need to party.

You make it sound so serious, it's fine to be like that around strangers lol

I can socialise but when I'm put in a position where the goal is to socialise rather than it being a by-product of some other activity, then it's awkward.

^ I think I make it sound serious because I'm a helluva lot older than you, Amy.  And I don't mean that in a patronising way.  My life experience is very different to yours and my reasons for drinking will also be very different. Smile
