I know I'm paranoid. But am I paranoid enough?

You make it sound so serious, it's fine to be like that around strangers
I can socialise but when I'm put in a position where the goal is to socialise rather than it being a by-product of some other activity, then it's awkward.
Bang on. The tennis club awards 'do' every November is fine, because it has a purpose. When you're forced to talk to strangers at a party who you've nothing in common with, it's just painful, superficial nonsense.

^ I think I make it sound serious because I'm a helluva lot older than you, Amy. And I don't mean that in a patronising way. My life experience is very different to yours and my reasons for drinking will also be very different.
Amy?

But anyway, I have no idea what your post meant. I don't know how you are trying to justify thinking it's serious when in fact it's very trivial once explained.
I doubt you're much older, if at all, than Grabcopy and I'm sure he doesn't think it's as serious as you make it sound. And damn you for bringing age into this, so silly!

See I love the chance to talk to new people...and at parties, social events if it doesn't click when you're talking to a stranger then you move on
I find people and their lives fascinating and I'm also the person who goes around looking for the people who look like they're struggling and chat to them ...yep I'm that person
Basically given the chance I'll talk the ear off almost anyone

BTW, you can call me Nigel, and I'm 46 (too old to reform).

You see, now I understand how people like you can enjoy parties without the drink. I have no interest in other peoples' lives unless they are already part of mine, so I'd end up pretending to be interested which will naturally lead to an uncomfortable and unnatural conversation.

Alcohol abuse is serious, Mark. It's a drug and it wrecks lives.

I don't think it's appropriate to refer to the scenario I gave as alcohol abuse

It's fine, people aren't old in my book unless they're older than my parents

I'm with you. I hate social pretence. And I'm just not a people person.

I wasn't referring to any scenario, I'm just saying that it's not a subject to be taken lightly.

That's fair enough, I was just saying that the explanation Nigel and I gave for our actions clearly show it's not something to be concerned about assuming you don't party too regularly that is

See you're probably the sort of person that if I met at a party I would make it my mission to get you to enjoy yourself
Think the lack of socialising is what's making me so down about being home just now. Outside of my close friends (who don't drink that much) most the people I come in contact are from my church and are either too young to drink or have families and don't go out much and if they do I'm more likely to be babysitting
Which is why soo looking forward to a weekend in aberdeen and getting to go out

This annoys me. Why do people have to enjoy themselves at parties? If you don't LIKE parties, you're not necessarily miserable. This is what people fail to understand in today's increasingly superficial society.
