I'm crap at explaining stuff like this, I prefer to let Wikipedia do the talking.
''Pale ale is a beer which uses a top-fermenting yeast and predominantly pale malt. It is one of the world's major beer styles.
The higher proportion of pale malts results in a lighter colour. The term "pale ale" was being applied around 1703 for beers made from malts dried with coke fuel, which resulted in a lighter colour than other beers popular at that time. Different brewing practices and hop levels have resulted in a range of taste and strength within the pale ale family''.

Didn't really answer your question, did I?
I drink it straight aye, but this stuff is only about 5% usually. The taste depends on the hops usually, some are quite fruity, and some can taste like caramel/chocolate.

I could go without alcohol for the rest of my life if I had to. It holds no real appeal. I just don't understand how anyone could like the taste of alcohol.

I think beer and wine do taste nice. You can appreciate the taste of those two drinks.
Whisky, I'm still getting round to that really, too harsh on the pallet.

Have you tried some of the really great malts? They're pretty smooth.
I love the scent of Jack Daniels - always associate it with .........
