The new breed of smartphones.

Guessing you just download the firmware online?
Not sure, I was a bit surprised when I was reading some HTC owners complain that they are still waiting for 1.6 to be updated... Before seeing that, I assumed you could easily do it yourself.

Maybe if you update it yourself, you have to do some dodgy stuff that voids the warranty.

With Nexus One, once an update is out, you'll quickly get a notification on your phone and it will just download and install itself.

think I've found a price plan for the Hero that means I won't be forced to turn to prostituting myself next year.
I really wanted N1 on contract but it's going to be exclusive to Vodafone initially and they haven't even given the release date yet. Not only that but because the phone will be hugely popular, they will most likely rip you off with £30-35 on 24 month contract... so I decided buy because I want it now and I think there's a good chance that it will end up cheaper to buy than to have on contract.

HTC are generally pretty slow at updating the older phones. There is a healthy community of people building custom ROM's for them though - I had a G1 before I bought the Desire and it was quite happily running Android 2.0... Here is a good place to start.

You should probably also be aware that the hardware in the Hero is rather old and slow compared to the current generation of phones...

Oh I'm sure it is Phyllis, but when you've ran a Sony Ericsson K800i since 2007, it's a massive, massive improvement. As a student, it's not really viable or feasible to buy a Nexus One or Desire.

Phil, with the HTC Desire, can you remove Sense UI and make it identical* to N1? And I know they both have 1ghz but would Desire run it as good as N1?

* Excluding the exclusive Google voice feature on N1.

Yeah, you can drop the sense UI and switch back to the default launcher if you want.

and... the Google voice feature is now installable on the Desire!

SINCE WHEN? Before I purchased N1 a few days ago, it was disabled on Desire and no one had modded it.
