The new breed of smartphones.

Looking for an upgrade in the summer, had my current phone since 2007.
Tempted to go for an HTC Android phone, the Android OS sounds great. Blackberry Curve looks good as well, but alas, it's only 2G.
Mark, surely as a high-flyer you have one of these smartphones, what would you recommend?

Google's Nexus is indeed very good, loads of apps too. As a Google fan I'd personally buy it over an iPhone

It's 400 quid though, that's not exactly student friendly.
I would agree though, it seems better than the iPhone. Oh, and it's only branded by Google, it's built by HTC.

Mark just loves Google and hates Microsoft and Apple! It's nothing to do with the phone itself!

Yeah, Google world domination hasn't quite reached hardware yet.

Nothing against Microsoft and also nothing particularly against Apple apart from I don't like Macs. Although it has to be said that anyone could be forgiven for hating Apple after launching the iPad.

No idea how you got that... I really like Bill Gates at least, nice guy. If I wasn't a gamer, I'd probably use Linux but Windows is alright.

I'm going to need to get a phone as well.
I currently have one of the most basic phones ever (I can only go as far as calling and texting).

The papa used to work for o2 so... I dont know where I'd be without it! Blackberry is appealing but I'm not an email person so it seemed pointless to me.

Go for the iphone Andrew. We have an ipod touch which is almost identical to an iphone except without the GPS and telephone calling service.
The great thing about the iphone/ipod touch is that there are 140,000 apps to download. Quite a few of them are free. We have found an app that tells us each day special promotions which tells the free apps to download for the day (instead of having to pay to buy).
We like the versatility it provides. You will be able to browse the internet whenever / wherever you want (assuming you have phone coverage (or wireless router at home)). You can get to your yahoo mail very quickly. There are lots of good games and useful apps like Doc to go where you can sync your Word and Excel files with your PC. There are radio apps to allow you to access >8000 radio channels. The list goes on.
Effectively it is like a mini computer. The big disadvantage is that an iphone is very expensive. I think its price will drop when the 4G iphone is announced in July.

I don't see the benefit of Blackberry now iPhones are out... I assume the only reason they are still selling is because companies already have their systems working with them. Blackberries will be an embarressment in a couple of years, like a brick mobile.

Mmm I agree I don't think they are really comparable to be honest, the Internet is pants.
A word of warning: If you do go for an iPhone, seriously save up and wait until you have enough to get the biggest one, even if it takes you months longer because I've filled mine up and it's only 8GB and it's pants and I'm now considering buying an iPod... Get a big iPhone, not an iPhone and an iPod!

I'm not a fan of touch screens so the iPhone's out for me.
