I use Google Navigation all the time - it's fantastic and appears to have all the features you get with the standalone units Smile

My hubbster is drooling for the new iPhone 5. His contract is up in a couple of months on his old one.
Interesting info, thanks Mark & Andrew.
I will show him later so he can make a more informed decision.

What would you suggest instead and why?

If he's loaded, he may as well get the iPhone.

I'm sure the iPhone, like its predecessors will be a great phone, and if he's a slut for Apple, chances are he will have accounts and affiliated gadgets, so it might make sense to keep purchasing their newest handsets.

However, I prefer the Android OS and you can get top of the range phones, with identical specs to the iPhone 5 for a smaller price.

Mark is more of a techie than myself so looking forward to his take on things.

But there are better phones out so I don't understand that statement. Galaxy S III as an example.

The iPhone 5 adds almost nothing while its competitors continue to innovate. It makes sense though because Apple are spending all their money on abusing patent law.

I'm getting pissed off with this whole smartphone situation. My HTC Desire contract is finally up next month and I want a qwerty keypad on a smartphone because I hate texting with a touchscreen but I will not be buying a Failberry. Why does Samsung or HTC not cater to this?? Rubbish.

Am I the only person with absolutely no desire for a smartphone? I'm still on the most basic low end cell phone with a keypad and really no interest in upgrading. I basically only text and call my parents and partner and I can actually cope without having to go on Facebook while I'm out or on the bus. I have a computer at home for all that and I have an ipod which holds significantly more than any smarthphone currently can. Birthday is next month and my Mum offered to get me a smarthphone and I just said that I don't want one and would rather have the money to put towards a PS3. I have no reason to spend the value of something like a PS3 on a device that does things not as well as the devices I already.

Anyone else here still on a basic old style cell phone?

I used to have a handy little samsung (cheap one, nothing special) for years before I got my iPhone. Was the same as you, had my iPod for music and that was all I needed. Eventually gave in and got an iPhone after my Samsung packed in (my iPod had been knackered for a while as well) and it was definitely worth it. Apart from the obvious of doubling up as both it's just a really handy multi-tool. Camera, maps (the maps are so bloody useful), phone, music, tennis scores, internet, email, password-keeper, calendar, compass... I rely on this bloody thing now.

But ye, I can see where you're coming from but seriously, if you got a smartphone I don't think you'd regret it.

It just seems pointless for my needs at the moment. I only really text 2 people regularly, 1 of whom I now live with so barely need to text anymore anyway. I only really need a phone to make arrangements and to have it there in case of emergency and a regular basic cell phone performs those tasks just as well as any smartphone.

Camera was a feature I forgot, but again I've got a good digital camera with a proper flash and optical zoom and all those things you don't get on a phone.

Things like live sports scores are not usually relevant for me because most sports I follow happen overnight my time and not during the day when I might be out and wanting to know what's happening. Although I do admit there are exceptions like the Aus Open or any cricket happening over this side of the world, but then I'll generally be at work and able to follow it on the computer, or if it's something I'm really interested in I'll probably be recording it and avoiding looking it up so I can watch it when I get home.

I'm sure I wouldn't regret having one but currently have no need to spend the money on one. I'll definitely have a good look at what is available and consider it when this one dies (by then maybe there will no such thing as a phone that's not a smart phone anyway) but would certainly not consider something at the Iphone end. No way I could justify spending that amount of money on a phone when you can get one that more or less does the same things for about a 5th of the price.

I have one but don't use the options - turned them all off.  I like that my new phone has lots of memory, so that I don't have to keep emptying my inbox.

I tried using livescores for the US Open but used up all my data allowance in one go just trying to download the ruddy thing!

I think I would like my own itouch to use around the house - music and internet (when I'm watching tennis and can post on mw without a computer).

I think in the UK and in Australia too, they have better packages for accessing internet, etc, without it costing the earth!
