I don't want to sound condescending or go all teachery on you all but I've been browsing some of the posts for the last 20 mins and I'm astonished at how many of you don't know your 'yours'. I'm on teaching placement at the moment and it's one of the most common mistakes from my 1st-2nd years and it is quickly becoming one of my pet peeves. So, if you don't mind, a quick tutorial:

Your= belonging to. e.g. 'Is that your pencil?' 'Your brother is in her class.'
You're= you are. e.g. 'You're being ridiculous.' 'You're never gonna get me to do it right.'

Oh, and while I'm on it the 'theres'.

Their= Belonging to. (Think of I. The I is in the word that talks about people) As in 'I'm going to their house'.
They're= They are. e.g. 'They're going to America'
There= Everything else. e.g. 'There is a meeting tonight' 'There are a few problems with that' 'You can't work there any longer!'

I know, forum, don't really bother with spelling, typos, thinking too quickly etc. And I know you all probably don't care and already know all of this. But for some of you it may be helpful so I thought I'd pop it up.

ban lol

highlighted the key point I feel. I'm quite sure most people are actually fine with their "yours" and "their's" but can't be bothered thinking about it to be honest. That's how I feel at least. Smile

Obviously some people are just thick lol

Might have known that was the type of response I'd get from you!

I did mention that I get that this is the case with most on here. I just know some people do genuinely struggle with it and never got any help to understand it. Especially some of the people with English as a 2nd or 3rd language. So I was hoping it would be helpful rather than pedantic.

And a dig at me for being pedantic? Coming from you? roflmao

My question is why the title isn't 'yours', since it's a plain plural.

Ha ha! Nice spot. Point taken. I could pretend it's deliberate but I'd be lying! I stand corrected.

People want to lynch me when I turn into a grammar Nazi. Hopefully you fare better than I do.

My pet hate is when someone writes "an historic". It caught on because people with a particular accent drop the h when they pronounce "historic". I don't give a toss what anyone says. It is wrong.

One spelling which gets me annoyed is how Mark (and others) spell ridiculous, with an e.

You see with that one I think you have to take into consideration whether the person that says it does actually drop the 'h'. If so they're perfectly within their rights to use 'an'. Mainly because the rule is to do with sound rather than spelling.

But it does irritate me.

Oh dear Lorna, I do love you ... for some strange reason lol  Personally I think mine are correct most of the time.  I think the only time I get it wrong is when I'm typing fast - or doing it on purpose to piss people off Whistle

Is it not Teacherley, rather than teachery??

But I guess its a good idea for the non-speaking English posters. I reckon most on here already know this but probably arent too bothered about getting them correct.
