Courage isn't absence of fear but mastery of it.

We are taught non-aggressive stance/behaviour when we have to deal with aggressive/out of control students.. absolutely NO finger pointing... avoid escalation and keep other students safe.
But it looked like she had already fully escalated and the students were unsafe. I support him going in there boldly - it at least focuses her attention on the immediate threat instead of the students.

We are trained in Non-Violent Crisis Intervention, and have to be re-certified every 2 years. Under no circumstances would we approach an out-of-control individual face on with a finger pointed in their face. Safety is always number one.
First, report and request assistance (if poss), assess and clear area, approach calmly side-on (never face-on.. more area for assailant to hit), low calm voice, de-escalate.
You have to think super-fast, and that's where the constant training comes in so you do it second nature.
I haven't had to deal with anything this extreme in my current position (altho my Vice-Principals have, hence the school lock-downs)... but I could tell you some pretty hairy stories Mark, believe me.
Of course the VAST majority of students are great..but unfortunately it is part of our job to be trained in dealing with crisis intervention.

Sounds sensible
But I think it's worth mentioning that the girl in the video does not appear to be capable of de-escalation via persuasion. That surely isn't just an angry student after a confrontation but rather someone who is mentally ill. The second video that has her dragged on the floor and then tazered, would seem to back this up.

Thanks Clydey. So far when the cops have came to our school (5 squad cars last time!) they haven't had to tazer a student, and hopefully never will.
Do you want to hear some of my stories? Don't want to ramble on unless there's interest.

You could always open a separate thread on this Linda, then it won't get mixed up along with any other weird stuff people want to post on here. And, yes, I'd be interested.

Yes.....I would be interested too Linda! Perhaps you could use the 'Randomness' thread if you don't want to open a new one!

Sure. As others have said, it's probably best to have the discussion in randomness, though.
