I can see a "coming of age" clay court season for Murray.

Im confident he can be as strong a force on clay than on other surfaces, but the difference is he can win against the top players on a hard court even when playing poorly - I dont think he'll have that luxury on clay against top clay courters. However, he really has put his game together since the last clay court season. Further to that, he's totally got his head in the right place and hes made a habit of winning.

As has been mentioned, I think he has the beating of Almagro, Robredo and Gonzalez with his improved game and he should now be targeting Davydenko, Djokovic (unlikely to meet him i suppose), Nalbandian, an improved JMDP, etc. Therefore his draw for Monte Carlo is a ideal test of where his game is now on Clay.

Although he may not make it consistently to the Semis, I have real optimism that he can ultimately reach a final or win a tournament, even notch a victory over Nadal* in this clay court season.

*Yes, I am dreaming! But in my defence I just watched the US Open 08 Semi (I know its the total opposite situation due to the surface) - it makes me feel like he can do anything. His pre-ATP level career record on clay is also very impressive....

I think he'll lose one somewhere, possibly in Rome, but it'll only be due to something like fatigue or injury. Like last year, when he played MC, Barca, then Rome in consecutive weeks and went out due to a massive blister on his foot against Ferrero... and he's trying to play the same three straight weeks again! He complains about the scheduling, but no-one says he HAS to play Barcelona!

I think the only reason that he went unbeaten on the surface in 2006 is because he and Federer pulled out of Hamburg after that epic final in Rome. Had he tried to play Hamburg, I reckon he would have succumbed to fatigue somewhere there.

Hmmm, injury will dictate if Nadal loses in this clay season, I can't see any player outplaying him on the red stuff.

I was actually disappointed in the odds because I think he will get beaten at least once, I went looking hoping to find maybe evens.

I agree with you Joe, that fitness/injury is the key factor. On this point though, I think the fact hes played more (intense) matches on hard courts might mean he's not quite as fresh (and therefore imperious) as usual. I think his fitness/strength and reputation are the key factors behind his incredible success on clay, but nobody is unbeatable. (Not saying he would otherwise be nowhere, just not neccesarily with such an insane win ratio).

Although illogical, I have a weird instinct that he won't win the French this year... shocking

Its about time for a winner from nowhere - none of the top 4 in the final style.

You know I don't think Andy's played an inappropriate drop shot for about 9 months. A couple of badly hit ones but his opponant was usually in a position where, had he hit it well, the drop shot was a perfectly decent tactic to employ. I wonder if Fredy has even watched Andy this year...?

Andy uses an inappropriate drop shot when tired or unsure of what else to do. Fortunately he's fitter than most and will outlast almost anyone these days and has developed the rest of his game so he gets his cheap points elsewhere. He still uses the drop shot but only when it's the best shot to do to. It is a pretty good tactic in some situations afterall.

i do beleive he has always the tools but now has the confidence and beleif in beating nadal, federer and djokovoc but i dont think nadal is beatable on the red stuff. ill have to settle for a few runner up spots
