Courage isn't absence of fear but mastery of it.

I think it is hard to say something about who is the least or most arrogant person doing top-sport, unless you know them personally. Someone can be trained to always say the right things, and be thought of as humble, whilst in reality acting very arrogant. Maybe Federer just got very used to the media and felt comfortable enough to say what he ,meant and felt instead of saying the things he (probably) knows are the 'right' things to say. I think it is good that there are being written critical articles like this, however, with some research, I think one could have written the same kind of article about many of the other top-players, Murrey included. I can just talk for my own experience and the impression I have on Federer from watching him in interviews etc. and that is a impression of a sympathetic, wise and nice man. And even though I like Murray, I have sometimes had an impression of him being a bit rude and arrogant in interviews. This might be my misinterpretation of what they are saying, or maybe I have watched other interviews than the article writer. And as the article writer himself argues; it can be hard for the audience to judge a person on a basis of what we see through media. Therefore I mean that we can all have impressions of people, but I try not to judge them, and will not change my mind about Federer due to this article, especially when it's published on murraysworld.com, and gives a hint that the article is not written very objectively, which is also very visible in the article which only takes one point of view.

^ Such a good post and a good point.  My sister's friend is an exclusive Air Hostess and has flown with the Federer family on many occasions.  She tells us they are lovely people and Fed is a gentleman.  It's not surprising he knows his own worth - he has every right to.  I don't think Andy is rude - just less enlightened.

Also, what a player says before a match can be of tactics and not something the person would normally say. Someone wants to push the favorite stamp on the opponent, whilst others prefer to self be the favorite, and might say things to bring one self up. It's a game and everyone has their own way of winning. In addition I can recognize his frustration of playing style. It can be compared with the football team Barcelona playing against Chelsea in the semi final of the Champions League. Federer and Barcelona have both a very offensive playing style, which is highly respected and valued. However, this playing style can be prevented by a player or a team who decides to play extremely defensive. It might lead them to victory, but in my opinion thta is a bit cowardly done and I understand that it is frustrating for both Federer and Barcelona. This is something that the opponents to Barcelona also gladly admits. I spoke to a player on Shaktar after a Champions League match last year, and he said that if extremely defensive play would give them victory, they would do it, but they was not proud of it, and he understood Barcelona's frustration. Federer complains about Murray standing far back in the court and waiting for the opponents mistake - I understand Federer's frustration about that. However, I do agree that there is no excuse to say rude things about anyone in the media. But I myself must say that when reading/seeing or listening to whole interviews of Federer I have not experienced him as rude.

Nobody's saying Federer isn't a delightful person away from tennis, which is one reason I opened a thread on here called "Federer Off-court", in which very few people were interested, which was a shame really, because we saw a completely different side of him there.

Andy has never been comfortable with the media, unlike Federer, although he's definitely improving, but I think in the past that's what's been responsible for some of his preceived surliness and dourness.

I do agree with you about the mind-games players are into before and during matches, and also that it isn't only confined to tennis.  I know very little about football but I think you make a good point when you say that players will go out and play the type of game they possibly don't want to if they think it'll help them to win at their opponents' expense.  However, the problem with Murray is that he seems to be a little too fond of standing far back in the court.  Until he shows more aggression and comes up to the net more he isn't going to get very far, and that applies to his matches with Federer.

Federer's arrogance has always been there..After 2008 when folks like Nadal,Nole and Murray started challenging him..this arrogance got catalyst and the curtains were raised..His God gifted talent of this sports is so much respected and admired, that most folks never pay attention to how rude and selfish he is at times. Thanks for this great post. Those who have the power to think and analyse things further beyond and go deep, will surely understand this naked truth of this guy

I´m a big fan of Djokovic and I think that the relations that Murray and Djokovic have is the best between two players. If the arrogant Federer can´t have friends like that in the tennisworld and can´t say nice things about his opponents then he should quit with tennis.

It was interesting yesterday on itv they were commenting that whereas Fed and Rafa used to have a good relationship it seems to have cooled off recently and Rafa and Nole are not on great terms.  Andy gets on very well with both Nole and Rafa and I'm sure he  would have liked to have been on good terms with Fed to whom he was incredibly respectful when he first played him but Fed treated him with disdain from the word go.  Says alot about the players as people I think

Fed's burned all his boats, then, cos he despises Nole. That leaves...er, Wawrinka, and he did his best to wreck that friendship at the Davis Cup.

It's not like Nadal is extra complimentary towards Djokovic. Doesn't even like him.

Hmm, Andy does seem to get on quite well with a lot of the guys on tour when you think about it. Nole and Rafa, Ferrer, Roddick, Lopez, Monaco.. trains regularly (or used to) with Nieminen and Wawrinka as well. Never thought about the other top guys. Guess Nadal is mates with all the Spanish players, Djokovic with the Serbs. Not sure who Fed really gets on with on tour.

The only friendships I've noticed between the top four so far are Andy/Nole and Andy/Nadal, so yea, clearly it's Andy who seems to be the common factor here. The way Nole celebrates victories, Nadal seems to have a lot of problems with that. Never mind Nadal's very own over the top point celebrations during a match. Nothing seems to bother Andy about other players as long as they are treated fairly, so Andy is clearly the player here who's most fair and very down to earth.

There's a certain ego around both Federer and Nadal though Nadal tries very hard to stay humble, but it can be detected. Nole is very fair to other players as well and a gracious loser. He only seems a bit obnoxious after big wins lol, but I really think it's very well deserved. It doesn't mean in your face but rather his own celebration in his own way, which has the elements to be interpreted the wrong way.
