Clydey, I'm not lying to you... I read MTF regularly and often see you post on it. On every visit I see swear words all over the place including older posts, that to me suggests the moderators are low on time or the board is low on staff, either one of those scenarios backs up what I was getting at. Feel free to once again suggest I'm lying but I'm telling you my true experiences and I accept yours might be different.
I think the arguments I have given are convincing and it's good to know that another administrator has backed those up.... I'll leave it to the readers of this forum to decide if the arguments Tally and I have given are "daft".
No, I assume moderators come home from work, spend just a couple of horus doing their moderator duties, which often means replying to members who have been seeking assitance ealier that day. Of course their time of technically being online they may not have many posts hundrds of posts to moderate but they will have jobs to do that have accumalated in that day.

Tally didn't backup your points. I don't recall her saying anything about moderators being too busy to delete the posts of members who are leaving. In fact, she said: "If you need certain specific posts removed then that's perfectly OK and reasonable."

I love that you're trying to pass her posts off as somehow vindicating your absurd view that moderators can't spare a few minutes to remove someone's posts, whose job might be on the line.

You do realise that there are moderators online when other moderators are unavailable? Jobs don't stack up as the day goes along. There are moderators online at different times of day. MTF has a ton of moderators. There are usually at least 2 on GM at any one time.

And since when is swearing against the rules on MTF? Personal insults are, but swearing isn't as far as I'm aware. That's beside the point, though. Even if it was, no one actually bothers about swearing. It's not on anyone's list of things to deal with.

MTF posting guidelines:

General conduct when posting:

(1) Please do not make personal attacks. Be courteous to other posters. Disagreeing with someone does not justify personal insults. Please resolve disagreements via PM, or notify a moderator about problems that need mediation. (most common infraction types: Inappropriate language, Insulted other member)

(2) Please do not make discriminatory remarks. These include, for example, discriminatory remarks based on race, ethnicity, descent, sex, sexual preference, or any other degrading or negative remarks about a whole nation or group of individuals. Also be aware of that bringing up political topics, or referring to politics in general, is very often a timebomb waiting to explode. Such discussions have very little content for the intended subject of the "General Messages" tennis forum and could be subject to deletion by a moderator at any time if they're getting out of hand. (most common infraction types: Racism, Inappropriate language, Insulted other member, forum disruptions)

(3) Try to avoid discussions that are unrelated to the main subject of threads. Posts that deviate significantly from the main point of a thread may be removed, or a thread may be closed when it has veered off topic, or is no longer generating any useful discussion. (most common infraction types: forum disruptions)

If a thread you have started seems to have disappeared and does not appear to have been merged in with another that is on a similar topic, it means that your thread has been deemed inappropriate by the moderators and removed. Explanation can be sought from the GM moderators if this causes confusion, but continued attempts to create the same thread after deletion will not be tolerated.

Rules when posting threads in GM:

(4) Prevent starting duplicate threads. This is especially annoying if the identical subject was already brought up by another poster just a few days ago. Use the search function and/or make sure that an identical or very related topic was not started by somebody else by looking at the next pages of the forum.

If you would like to bring up an issue again, simply post in the older thread(s).

(5) Make sure the thread you are about to start is worthy of discussion and is related to tennis. The fact that this forum is called "General Messages" does not mean that anything goes here.

    (i) Please don't start threads just to get answers about a matter in a short period of time. Have in mind that every separate section of the board has a purpose

(ii) Do not start threads with the sole intention of bashing a player. E.g. "player X is a loser", or "player Y is a choker", or "I hate player Z". Conversely, threads made solely to praise your favorite player (e.g. "I love player X”, “Player Y is the best ever”) are better fit for the player's own forum. (most common infraction types: forum disruptions, trolling, repeated baiting)

(iii) Refrain from starting threads with the sole intention of speculating on a delicate issue involving a particular player unless there is an actual outside source/link to back the story up. That includes doping and match-fixing allegations, as well as gossip about the given player's personal life. (most common infraction types: forum disruptions, trolling, repeated baiting)

(iv) The following type of threads/discussions go into the respective tournament forums:

            * Live scores/discussions of matches during a match: go and talk about the match in the tournament forum or wait until the match is finished to talk about it in GM post-match result thread
            * daily order of play (OOP)
            * TV schedules
            * questions about attending the tournament
            * tournament draws and resulting discussion (with exception of the 4 Grand Slams + Masters)

    (v) Threads regarding doubles go in the doubles forum.

    (vi) Threads about minor happenings

            * involving a single player (e.g. change of sponsor, off-court action) are not of general interest and belong into the player forums.
            * in general, or just overly repeated topics will be merged and/or deleted up to the discretion of the responsible moderators.

(vii) Personal questions about your and other posters' tennis game, or tennis equipment, go in the amateur tennis forum.

(viii) Threads about gambling strategies, betting odds etc. go in the gamblers lounge.

(ix) If you have a tennis blog/site and wish to post your articles here to open a discussion, go to the Fan Blogs section.

    (x) Exhibitions are not meant to be taken seriously, so please don't start pre-match polls or post-match result threads here about exhibition matches. You can use the exhibitions forum for more detailed info and discussions.

(xi) Threads about women's tennis (WTA) are not permitted on this board, if you wish to discuss the WTA, go to our sister site http://www.tennisforum.com

(6) Do not create threads

        * about results before the matches are really completed (e.g. "Player A def. Player B 6-4 6-4").
        * about premature discussions of draws until the draw is released.

(7) Do not start threads without substance or without anything worthy to discuss. Examples:

        * "XXXX should retire" (for a young player after losing a random match)
        * "XXXX will win Roland Garros" (for a #200 ranked player)
        * "XXXX and YYYY would make a great couple"
        * threads which are deemed as trolling or baiting attempts, or just to gain attention

(most common infraction types: forum disruptions, trolling, repeated baiting)

If necessary, new rules may be added, and existing rules may be edited.

Doesn't say anything about swearing.

I take that back then, it's not important to my post anyway.

Once again you are assuming you know how every large forum is run, at least I'm accepting that every forum is different and therefore staffing situations will differ.

And since when is swearing against the rules on MTF? Personal insults are, but swearing isn't as far as I'm aware.
Exactly why I said earlier in this thread, "Imagine an MTF that has moderators enforcing the most common rules found on forums"... I think we both can agree that 'no swearing' is a common rule. This all once again adds to the fact that every forum is different and in no way have I suggested my arguments apply to all large forums.

MTF posting guidelines:
No need for that, I only assumed swearing was against the rules because you didn't pick up on me mentioning it in my "imagine MTF" post. This doesn't change any of my arguments as I have already said I see people insulting each other all the time.

No need for that, I only assumed swearing was against the rules because of your response to my "imagine MTF" post.

It proves your whole point wrong about MTF moderators not having time to deal with swearing. It's not against the rules. That's why it's not dealt with.

Your arguments don't apply to any forums. Forums don't put moderators in place and work them like it's a full time job. There are enough moderators on forums so that the workload is shared. It wouldn't be efficient if it wasn't like that.

People get warned for insults all the time. The posts only get removed if the language is deemed offensive. For example, you won't see a post removed if someone says "Stop being an idiot". You will see the post removed if they say "You're a ******* idiot".

No, did you not read my post? It proves the absolute opposite!

Swearing breaks the rules on most forums so I asked you to imagine MTF being moderated based on common rules because it's a good example of other forums that also have swearing. So if you are willing to accept that they swear all the time over there then you are willing to accept that moderating such a forum based on common rules would be a tiresome task.

Yes, they wouldn't swear that much if it was against the rules but that doesn't change the scenario I was trying to show you.

Once again... asumming you know how the admins of most large forums organise their moderators , I was simply referring to certain scanarios where moderators may not be in large numbers and may not be perfectly organised.

Once again... asumming you know how the admins of most large forums assign their moderators... no point arguing here because it's guess work.

It does change the scenario. Firstly, I don't accept the premise that swearing is usually against the rules. Never posted on a forum like that. Swearing is censored by ***, but it isn't against the rules. And if it was against the rules, there wouldn't be much swearing, as you said.

Keep digging a deeper hole for yourself, Mark. Moderators are so busy. They can't spare a few minutes to remove some posts. lmao

I gave a scenario where swearing IS against the rules and where it happens as often as MTF... that was the scenario I gave and it hasn't changed. There are many forums that are like that, believe it or not.

We both are very argumentative and whether we think we are right or wrong, this can potentially go on forever.

I've given my arguments, I think they are convincing, you don't, I'll leave it at that.

(Feel free to have the last say, it's only fair.)

I think all this arose because of someone wanting to delete their posts. That's a huge job, a specific one or two posts is no hassle, but ttrules didn't say that did he?

( We had a case where someone wanted ALL her posts deleted. An impossible task I'm afraid, besides it sets the wrong precedent.)

And I'm off to bed, so that's my lot on this subject. Smile

He wanted his account deleted. If he wanted all his posts deleted, that is different.

If you delete them all, yes. I don't think there would be a good reason to delete all of someone's posts.

Yes, this is one of the reasons we have an edit period because people like Thomasredlegs might go back back and delete hundreds of their posts in some mental rampage.

I should note that if someone deletes my posts at my request, I am appreciative of it. It's still only common decency to comply with the request, though.

Yes I agree that with this forum, it's not too much to ask that a moderator edit out revealing information from a few of your posts as long as something is left so that the thread makes sense, that could be a moderator notice or if it's appropriate, just the remainder of the post.
