Well that was pointless!!
That discussion right there just proved how important this particular thread is for dumping feedback in - thank god the readers of our news page will not have to read all of that

I must protest. It's one thing for dumb sportsmen to ignore adverbs, but it's another thing entirely for 'writers'. It's play aggressiveLY. The simplification of language leads inevitably to the simplification of thought (Stagger, 2009).

I'm not a writer which is why straight after I posted the news, I immediately asked the real writers to fix up my article but they didn't see anything wrong, so it's their fault

Wish someone could have told me sooner, we all know I'm not a writer.

Don't think you need to beat yourself up about it. Everyone got the gist.

Back to school for you!
To be fair, that sort of incorrect grammar has crept into sports commentary (mainly football spoken journalism) and is used almost all the time now, so it's no surprise that people are using it in everyday situations now. Those former footballers-turned-pundits-and-journalists have a lot to answer for with their piss poor education!

This explains why before I posted the article, I Google'd "to play aggressive" and saw plenty of articles using it.

START!!
Part of the reason that I've gone off football more and more over the last few years is the god-awful standard of English used by players and managers. Picky, I know, but it does my head in!

Oh Jeez, I always thought it was just used by eejit pundits who can't speak properly - terrible to see that it's spread to the written media!
It's exactly the same as saying 'he played great' or 'he played good' - no, it should be 'he played well'!

I think it may well be an Americanism creeping in, I can imagine MacEnroe saying it
