Andy Murray confirmed last night that he has hired Frank Dick, a former head of British athletics and a leading fitness coach, as a consultant to "help co-ordinate the long-term strategy" and also advise on a physical programme that will improve and then maintain his conditioning.

The arrangement was agreed this week following the formal meeting that Dick had with Murray's coach, Mark Petchey, and his mother and manager, Judy. Dick first showed an interest in helping with Murray's fitness and nutrition by calling Judy "completely out of the blue" during the Wimbledon Championships.

The thinking in the camp is that Murray, the world No 111, will enter enough tournaments to hopefully break into the top 100 and guarantee direct entry into the first grand slam of next season, the Australian Open. And he will then take a break from competition and have "a training block" in November and December to build up his strength and stamina for the full season ahead.

Though Murray had indicated that after the Davis Cup he would play two tour-level events in Asia, for which he would have needed wild cards, his schedule appears to have changed. He is now planning to enter around five tournaments on the Challenger circuit, the level below the main tour, possibly including events in the United States and Korea as well as Europe.
