I wonder if those with a very good sense of humour read Kelvin Mackenzie's debut page in The Mail on Saturday entitled "Why don't the Scots merge with Greece?.   As the page header said "Irrepressible, uproariously un-PC, a new star joins the Mail".  On a par for hilarity with Clarkson's column in The Sun on Saturdays.
I have a very good sense of humour but, having tracked the article down online, didn't find it particularly amusing; but then Mackenzie's humour was often on the iffy side when he worked for the Sun - not that I read that rag but some of his stuff was so controversial that it was widely commented on.  I suppose it's the old thing that people of any country will laugh at themselves provided it's one of their own who's doing the joking, but (with the odd exception) don't find it funny if the jokes come from an "outsider".

Frankly, I think FOS is an appauling song. It talks about a defeat, not a victory Give me Scots wha hae anytime.
Scotland the Brave every time for me!  Rousing tune, positive words - what more do you want!

Please can we come away from this Scottish/English thing and just support the tennis.
If only ...  Unfortunately it does tend to crop up on here from time to time.

Couldnt get to Scotland last weekend but I was there in July. I am English and guess what I didnt sing along to gstq but was enjoying singing along to everything else including You take the high road, I will walk 500 miles and everything else which added to the fantastic atmosphere. Frankly this debate is just rediculous. ALL the boys played fantasticly well and we won 5 love that is all we need to be talking about.  Andy is getting depressed by negative comments made about him and has commented on it alot recently dont you think it is bad enough that the media continue to do this without this site of his "supporters" joining in especially on something as petty as what he sang, you needed to be there to understand.
Yep!.....I agree Tessie!

Thank you for confirming my earlier post that Andy did sing along to Flower of Scotland.  A very anti-English anthem, which, from my ignorance, I thought was an ancient song, but it was in fact penned in 1965.  I now even more think this an insult to Ward and Hutchins and other English members of the GB Team, as well as the viewing and supporting public.  And it may be as well to remember that Wales is also a member of Great Britain.  How much more diplomatic it would have been for the hosts to have offered an array of songs dipicting each of the 3 nations.

Andy is obviously very proud of his Scottish roots, but there are times when folk like him, in the public eye, need to be mindful of their actions.  I very much enjoy watching Andy play and hope that he will continue to succeed, but I know also that this weekend will make my sister and several of my friends dislike him even more.  No matter what I say, they still won't forgive him for the "anyone but England" faux pas and this has added insult.

As they played GSTQ on Friday I think this was an insult to Andy, Fleming, Leon Smith and the majority of the Scottish audience, so it was only right that they played Flower of Scotland as well, when they were playing the Davis Cup on Scottish soil. The Murray haters would still hate Andy if he only sang GSTQ and not Flower of Scotland, so I don't see what all the fuss is about. Andy is intitled to sing Flower of Scotland as he is Scottish!

Mackenzie needs some new material. I remember him slating Gordon Brown on Question Time a few years ago for being Scottish. He's just a media troll, but he's also a total dick. Anyone who worked for The Sun has to be. John Gaunt is just as bad.

By the way FCR, what were you doing reading The Mail? Do you often look at the printing embossed on to your toilet paper?

Well said Iona Red.  And GSTQ is a pretty boring dirge and I don't know anyone Scottish or English who thinks otherwise Wink

Nothing to do with tennis, I know, Aileen, but if the figures Mackenzie quotes are true and if Scotland did eventually gain total independence, I would hate to see your proud country struggle as a result.  I hope all Scots will be well informed before putting a cross in the yes box in a referendum ballot.  Good luck if you do.

You can't be serious FCR, taking some old bigot like Kelvin Mackenzie on his word.
I also didn't find it amusing although I'm sure I would have done if I were anti Scottish (which I'm certainly not).
What's his problem also, as he clearly has Scottish blood?
Anyway he says that 31% of all jobs up in Scotland are State jobs, I've just checked, it's actually 23% a bit more than England and less than N Ireland, Wales.
The crux of his argument is factually incorrect.
So there's nowhere to go on it.
Now, we could talk about the unfairness of the Barnett Formula etc
But I don't hold the Scots responsible for that, & they also pay taxes after all, although public spending should be made fairer. But we should always stick to the facts at least.
Still they are denied the exclusive benefits of the oil industry that would probably make them richer than anywhere apart from London, so....
Anyway you're correct, it's probably not an appropriate place for a politics discussion.

I'm not quite sure why you think playing GSTQ was an insult to the Scottish team members or the Scottish audience.  It's the British anthem and the last time I checked the Scots were British.  I admit I'm not a big fan of it but it's still my anthem.

It's not an anthem we hear much in Scotland as we don't tend to host British events. We're obviously most likely to hear it if England are visiting.  The English and British anthem being the same has always stuck me as a little odd.

I agree with you IonaRed.  I think England using GSTQ as their anthem causes some people seem to think that it's the English anthem rather than the British anthem.  I'm pretty sure most English supporters would like to have an anthem that is purely English.  I can't remember what they play when England win gold at the Commonwealth Games - is it Land of Hope and Glory?

I don't think many of the British Team sand GSTQ on Friday - it is just the same as the Footy and Rugby etc. emotion gets the better and the players stand tight lipped.  Andy was clearly enjoying himself during the course of the weekend singing and dancing along to the Proclaimers, Loch Lomond etc.  Why should he not he is Scottish after all.   The passion and desire as a result of Andy being piped in to FOS is only something you get if you are Scottish - it was a proud moment for him.  We were sitting next to some English folks who were lapping up the Scottish vibe - they wanted to experience a Scottish welcome and they thought it was fantastic - I don't think many English people who were actually there were offended by the scottish factor  - quite the opposite they thought it was an amazing atmosphere.  Andy is Scottish and wants to celebrate that fact when he comes home - not really that big an issue - Tim Henman was proud of being English would we have wanted him to don a kilt and learn the words to FOS???? No !!!!  It sometimes feels that Andy can't do right for doing wrong.  He is the ultimate sportsman - aiming high and achieving greatness - let's celebrate that fact - consistently No. 4 in the world (likely to be No. 3 by year end) yes us Scots are very proud of him as are much of the UK.
