Lacklustre Murray crashes out

Quote

Andy Murray's Rogers Cup campaign came to an abrupt conclusion with a disappointing 4-6, 3-6 defeat to Ernest Gulbis. The Scot struggled throughout and was in the end well beaten.

Murray started brightly and earned two break points at 3-3 but was unable to convert. The Scot was relatively comfortable in his own service games until 5-4*, when a double fault and an inexplicable forehand error opened the door for his opponent. Gulbis barged through, a beautifully weighted drop-shot bringing up three set points. Murray saved the first but a tame second serve sat up invitingly and the Latvian bludgeoned a return to take the set.

The Gulbis baseline game was now clicking into first gear. The Latvian is famous for his mental walkabouts and unforced error prolificacy, but neither flaws were evident. Murray by way of contrast was increasingly erratic and soon slipped 3-1 down. The Scot flirted with a comeback, but was broken for a third and final time at 4-3.

Murray is still alive in the doubles event, where he is competing with Colin Fleming.

Disappointing but neither disastrous nor entirely unexpected.

If you're going to use a picture with your report, it would be respectful to Andy if you could use one from the Gulbis match today.

This one is from his match with Granollers, yesterday.

Guess you didn't see that one?

I didn't see the match but I think we've all seen enough of such performances immediately after longish breaks to know that this shouldn't be used to predict his US Open form. We'll have more of an idea of where his form/mental state is next week in Cincinnati. I think the fact that Andy opted to play doubles as well as singles this week shows that he was treating Montreal primarily as a chance to get as much competitive time as possible on North American hardcourts. Perhaps not advisable if he wants to get to Number 1 as he will need as many points from hardcourt Masters as he can get, but I'll take his way of thinking for now. Let's face it, if he wins the US Open and therefore his third Slam in a few weeks time, no-one will give a toss about this. On to Cincy, where he should be taking things a bit more seriously.

Disappointing but expected.      It's hard to come back down from a high after winning a slam especially since it was Wimbledon.
